A delightfully unexpected collection of short stories. Modan has a very unique style both in prose and illustration.

A treat reminiscent of Reichl's "Tender at the Bone". Relish similarly has the whole fascinating-life-story-anchored-around-food type thing that I so enjoyed in Reichl's work. I picked this up after it was recommended at TCAF. It didn't disappoint! A truly tender look inside the lives of the authors parents. Not only did they live through fascinating times but they were deeply, yet perhaps quietly, in love with each other. Very touching.I picked this up after it was recommended at TCAF. I loved this book. It is so important to draw on resilience and creativity in times of despair. Books like this can be true lifeboats.

I loved discovering this book! The work was published by Melville House as part of the "Neversink Library", who "champions books from around the world that have been overlooked, underappreciated, looked askance at, or foolishly ignored". It is a clear and intriguing read that accomplishes a lot, digs deep, swiftly and with elegance. Keep your eyes open for these Neversink titles! If this book is any reflection of the whole, I have a feeling they are a goldmine.I loved discovering this book! A short little adventure into the life of an "anybody" kind of man who confronts death by visiting funerals and giving eulogies. The narrative is short and sweet and ties up in a neat little coincidence that was a surprise but at the same time felt vaguely familiar. The story, not the illustrations, is the where the power of this story lies.A short little adventure into the life of an "anybody" kind of man who confronts death by visiting funerals and giving eulogies. Roots of Empathy a really neat, locally 'grown' program. How could a simple visit from a parent and their baby impact a classroom? It turns out very deeply! I picked this up because I adore Leonard Cohen and he wrote the foreword to this book. Haubner and Cohen are both students of the famed Kyozan Joshu Sasaki (or Roshi, as they both refer to him). If you have read a lot about Zen let me assure you this is NOT your regular book about Buddhism. Haubner dives deep into his personal struggles that led him to Roshi's center on Mt.Baldy and takes us deep inside the contradictions and beatitude of his life as a monk. Slightly overwritten, this book is a bit of a challenge to get through but I appreciated the insight Haubner leads us to with each chapter. I was a bit turned off by some of the more crude passages and shriveled a bit at some of the representations of women. But, overall, if you are equipped with a bit flexibility, I would recommend this to anyone interested in the Middle path (and all of the paradoxes it holds).I picked this up because I adore Leonard Cohen and he wrote the foreword to this book. My mother always told me never to judge a book by it's cover and I really wish I had taken her more literally. This book has the most beautiful cover but was one of the most painful things I have read recently! I know the author was trying to get a some tragic truths but I found I couldn't muster any empathy for the characters. That said, I had a really strong reaction to this book which probably means I will be carrying it with me for some time. So there was a lot of pain in equal measure with a LOT of impact. My mother always told me never to judge a book by it's cover and I really wish I had taken her more literally. I second someone's earlier comment that this is their favorite Canadian book so far this year. I dove right into this story and couldn't put it down. Soul searching memoir? Vengeful cash grab? This book has been called a lot of things and I honestly am not sure where I stand. But I can tell you, it is one compelling read. As someone with a minor interest in Steve Jobs the most gripping aspect of this memoir, for me, was the perspective.
While I did tire of Brennan's somewhat condescending passages about actions Jobs should have taken to be more "decent" and "appropriate", my interest was piqued by her unique way of interpreting events. Brennan's narrative touches on issues of power, technology and the women's movement but I don't know if I've read about any of these from a perspective like hers.
While I don't necessarily share the same beliefs I felt that this perspective is unique and compelling. I kept yearning for someone to talk about this book with!
