Ready Player One is a sci-fi adventure filled to the brim with '80's pop-culture references thrown in your face. This can be off-putting at first, there is a section where multiple pages of dialogue is dedicated to two of the protagonists arguing about Star Wars. This can come off as pretentious at first ("look at me, look how much I know about the 1980s"), however it donned on me that that was the point. The protagonist is obsessed with utilizing 80's culture to discover the key to ultimate riches in the virtual reality game that rules the near-apocalyptic world they live in. This is a great read, with literally never-ending puzzle solving and action sequences.Ready Player One is a sci-fi adventure filled to the brim with '80's pop-culture references thrown in your face. A simplistic tale, I did not expect the book to be so large or contain so many pictures! A unique fairy-tale, one about a girl going on an adventure and receiving help from animals and other girls. The naive narrator is an essential part of what makes this book as impactful as it is. Bruno and Shmuel's lack of understanding of the situations they're in really effect the reader emotionally. This book is strewn with blatant metaphors, however they aren't as irksome as I usually find highly conspicuous messages. In fact, they compliment the simplicity of the tale told through a 9 year old's eyes. The naive narrator is an essential part of what makes this book as impactful as it is. Blackout delivers a satisfying conclusion to a thrilling and emotionally captivating series. Satisfyingly, no questions are left un-answered, and a prequel has also been released (sadly, only on e-books). Although the description makes the book sound a lot more exciting than it is action-wise, the focus on the characters and their development is very enthralling. [SPOILERS IMMINENT] Deadline is everything one could hope for in a sequel, especially following Georgia's death. Shaun's clearly codependent relationship with Georgia didn't go away, it lingered with him in the worst of ways. The Coda is the reason I came back to this book and re-read it before venturing on to the final book in the series. The hint at an incestual relationship I interpreted as an extreme temporary symptom of his schizophrenia, not an actual relationship between the two, as many readers have believed. Overall, although it doesn't live up to the first book, I believe that Shaun's descent into insanity will repair itself in the next book, if the siblings are reunited. A great book.[SPOILERS IMMINENT] Deadline is everything one could hope for in a sequel, especially following Georgia's death. Feed's unique post-apocalyptic universe has not, even after my second read, ceased to fascinate and impress me... primarily due to the fact that the world has not come screeching to a halt. The entire population of Earth does not slink into hiding places and form small, ragtag teams of survivors. Life goes on, as it would realistically, forming new culture, new ways of life, and above all, new priorities in one's life. Feed follows adoptive siblings Georgia and Shaun Mason, bloggers in a world that has a strong demand for civilian journalism and online news. This story will not shock you with gore, leave you terrified of zombies, or be a non-stop thrill ride. It will put you in the shoes of two realistically written characters and their journey to fame through news and entertainment. It will leave you entertained, even when nothing visibly or outrageously entertaining is occurring. That's how you know a person is a good author. This is, without a doubt, the best zombie novel I have had the privilege of reading, and I highly recommend it.Feed's unique post-apocalyptic universe has not, even after my second read, ceased to fascinate and impress me... primarily due to the fact that the world has not come screeching to a halt. A highly clever and comedic choose-your-own-adventure novel from the mind of Ryan North. The narrative of this book is extremely cheerful and hilarious, delivering biting and accurate commentary and criticism pertaining to Hamlet's plot and characters. The humor is intended for younger audiences, clearly, as is the same with almost all of Ryan North's books. I had been meaning to read David Wong's novel for quite a while, and I'm glad I finally did. This book is a fantastic sci-fi and supernatural adventure, filled with horror elements and a lot of comedy. The book at the beginning just appears to be confusing and the plot seems jumbled -- but that's the point, as the story follows two young men who are just as confused about the situation as you should be. The humor in this book is fairly juvenile, but the characters are as well, age wise, so I wouldn't expect anything else. I did not begin reading this book with high expectations, and ended up being pleasantly surprised. I have never personally been a fan of John Green (neither as a person, author, or YouTuber), but decided to try this book due to the overwhelming popularity it has gained recently in pop culture.
The Fault in Our Stars is filled to the brim with its fair share of both teen angst (understandable, as all the protagonists are diagnosed with cancer) and light humor. To be frank, this novel is one of the most pretentious pieces of literature I have ever read. It's clear that the novel was written to appeal to the "deep" teenager, one that believes they are unbelievably smarter than their peers. The protagonists are bursting with personality, something than is not often found in YA literature, in my opinion, but speak as no teenager possibly would, coming up with elaborate symbolism on the spot, using the most flowery language that they possibly can muster. This story was entertaining, but John Green's ego seems to get in the way of the story containing anything close to resembling actual teenagers.I did not begin reading this book with high expectations, and ended up being pleasantly surprised. I honestly have to disagree with the majority of reviews here. This book, while the plot could have been cohesive and fairly enjoyable, struggles to thrive and shine through Veronica Roth's horrible writing. The entire book is written with a sense of rush, there is no passion or emotion behind the words. Every action that Tris (short for Beatrice, as the "relatable" YA protag can't have a name like that, or a more normal nickname such as "Bea") describes is written like a list of aloof actions, even in scenes of intense emotional turmoil. The only characters that have a human amount of both flaws and virtues are Al and Four, and Al can hardly be described as a main character. This book is clearly meant to cater to young teenage girls, so if you are one, by all means, read this. However, if you are over the age of 15, perhaps, you'll likely find this story full of overused tropes and stereotypical, lifeless characters in a fantastic world that hardly gets described to the audience.I honestly have to disagree with the majority of reviews here. Hosseini truly utilized his amazing storytelling skills and ability to evoke emotions in and relate to his audience. This novel focuses mostly on sibling relationships, as opposed to his last two novels. I will admit the point of view changes often, but the characters all connect to the main two protagonists.
