A daring, edgy, at times brilliant debut. If only it wasn't so desperate to be dark and depressing, apparently Conor Oberst's idea of what "art" "should" be.

Probably one of the more famous songs off this album, and certainly one of the most listenable. If you like this, you'll LOVE the later albums.

Rick Rubin keeps this album sounding great. If only Bugg would slow down and let his songs breathe instead of throttling them with obnoxious guitar riffs. And if only his songs had a little bit more substance to offer in the first place. Bugg remains a promising young artist, but he's still too young to make a truly great album even with a famous producer behind him. Give him a few more years, and in the meantime try to enjoy the few tracks on this album where Bugg gets it right.Rick Rubin keeps this album sounding great. A promising debut. Jake Bugg's still young, and his lyrics still tend to lunge at poetry without quite grasping it. But his retro blues and folk-rock sensibilities are refreshing, and his subject matter is gritty enough to set itself apart from most contemporary hipster pop. Are comparisons to Bob Dylan warranted? No. But who knows what the future holds.A promising debut. Jake Bugg's still young, and his lyrics still tend to lunge at poetry without quite grasping it. The hooks are big and any given song sounds great on a car radio. But when you actually sit and listen to the whole album, you realize that, as with "Overexposed", there's simply not much there. Maroon 5 doesn't even feel like a band anymore - it's become a business, coldly churning out a packaged product. The hooks are big and any given song sounds great on a car radio. Hm. Maybe Maroon 5 CAN still be edgy ...

Lorde is a heavily produced and thoroughly stage-managed phenomenon, and that shows in an album that is clearly calculated for maximum success in the "teen indie pop" market. But despite its pre-packaged quality, you can't help but be impressed by this 18-year-old's vocal talent, her willingness to engage in social commentary (particularly in songs like "Buzzcut Season", which border on actual edginess), and the sheer infectiousness of the melodies her team of producers has crafted. Lorde is undeniably a controlled product, but, hey, so was Michael Jackson when he was 18. And Lorde has the same potential to grow into an anthemic, insightful pop innovator if she stops playing things so safe. Will she? Let's live that fantasy.Lorde is a heavily produced and thoroughly stage-managed phenomenon, and that shows in an album that is clearly calculated for maximum success in the "teen indie pop" market.
