This is the first book of a trilogy. I found the characters interesting, diverse, and occasionally perverse in making bad decisions. The world building is a bit more than adequate. The main downside is that "battles" are dealt with quickly and pretty much always with the same Deus ex Machina approach- the last minute unforeseen introduction of a previously unrevealed power and/or person that saves the day and helps our heroes live to fight on. There is humor (yay!) and moral ambiguity in most of the characters. Once I got well into the first book I got hooked and pretty much sped through all 3 volumes, which was not hard to do as Bardugo's prose is easy enough to read. I should go on to say that the second book is better than the first and the third satisfied the reader with an ending, although it drags underground (you'll see). This is the first book of a trilogy. It is refreshing when a quite fascinating book is followed by an even better concluding volume. This is the case with Muse of Nightmares succeeding Strange the Dreamer. (not a spoiler--Taylor leaves herself open to some of these characters going on to other adventures together, but definitely wraps up this complex story line.)It is refreshing when a quite fascinating book is followed by an even better concluding volume. This is not to be missed if you are at all interested in the Supreme Court, the law, or equal rights for women. RBG is very inspiring, although her work ethic far surpasses mine luckily for us all.

I had forgotten just how funny this Pratchett is. Rereading it untied the knots in my brain.

I hadn't known that this 4th book existed, but I read it immediately when I discovered it in the library. It is a worthy follow up to the first 3 Earthsea books.

I reread this on a Pratchett binge and found I didn't remember some of it. I must have read it only once. It is vintage Pratchett and well worth multiple readings.

This is not one of Pratchett's best efforts. If you are new to Discworld, don't start here. If you are already hooked you will read this one anyway and it does have funny bits, often with Angua and Vimes. Certainly the girls' night out with a dwarf, a werewolf, a vampire, and a stripper is worth the read. This is not one of Pratchett's best efforts. If you are new to Discworld, don't start here. Smith writes prolifically about detectives in Botswana, Portuguese irregular verbs, etc. This time, during a hot summer, the cool climes of Edinburg, both regional and intellectual, called to me. I was not disappointed. Although Isabel Dalhousie does very little detective work, we get a lot of Edinburg, its people, its places, ethics, food, culture, and, of course the author's rather whimsical and random observations of human nature thinly veiled as the thoughts of Ms. Dalhousie. Smith weaves his omniscient narration so skillfully into the thoughts implied (but never formally attributed) to our protagonist that we walk with her through her life as editor of a philosophical review, mother of a 2 year old, and almost fiancée to a younger man experiencing her realizations and self review of same. This is light enough for a beach read and yet deep enough to make you think a bit too.Smith writes prolifically about detectives in Botswana, Portuguese irregular verbs, etc. This time, during a hot summer, the cool climes of Edinburg, both regional and intellectual, called to me. This, the final book of Hartman/s Seraphina trilogy, has some surprises in store for the fans of her series filled with half-dragons and dragons and most plotlines are wrapped up satisfactorily. Seraphina, first book in the series, is the place to start, of course, and is the best book of the three. Still, I confess to impatiently awaiting the appearance of this third volume and I wasn't at all disappointed. This, the final book of Hartman/s Seraphina trilogy, has some surprises in store for the fans of her series filled with half-dragons and dragons and most plotlines are wrapped up satisfactorily. I'm a fan of Stephen Fry and this book is a good representative of his dry British wit. We follow our protagonist, an alcoholic, once famous, poet and rake as he becomes a detective in an estate worthy of Brideshead. The quirky characters sparkle with varying degrees of depravity and innocence.I'm a fan of Stephen Fry and this book is a good representative of his dry British wit. This is a long and fantastic finale not only to the story of Fitz and the Fool, but in a way ties all the Mad Ship and Dragon books together with it. I had to work to remember some of the characters I read many years ago. Needless to say it was worth the effort and patience it required. This is a long and fantastic finale not only to the story of Fitz and the Fool, but in a way ties all the Mad Ship and Dragon books together with it.
