This book promised lots of good info BUT, yet again, here is another book published with minuscule print. The font was so astonishingly small that I got my trusty measuring tape out to determine the exact size. The print is only 1/8” or 2mm in height. Add that to the very light grey colour used for the type and it makes for something incredibly difficult to read let alone use. I believe that even someone with young eyes and 20/20 vision would struggle with this. The book is small in dimensions and as seems to be the current trend in publishing, there is a lot of empty space that could be used for text of a larger more legible size. I was really looking forward to using this book to help with my botanical dyeing adventures but NO. To say it’s useless in its current format would be giving it a lustre it doesn’t deserve. This book promised lots of good info BUT, yet again, here is another book published with minuscule print. Chetna does it again! This is yet another great book filled with easy and healthy ideas. Methods are straightforward and well explained so if you are on the fence about cooking because you think it may be a complex process, give something in this book a try. I find the ingredients are easy to source and she offers suggestions of other dishes to serve with whatever you are making. This is a great book for those wanting to delve into Indian cooking and also for those already experienced with this flavourful cuisine. Chetna presents a whole lot of meals, vegan, vegetarian and otherwise, that are easy to assemble and delicious. Her instructions are clear and for the most part, I have found all the ingredients easy to source in the city where I live. I borrowed this book and then liked it enough to buy it. This is another cookbook that is completely unusable in the kitchen. The entire thing is printed in an 8 point font. That is minuscule and completely illegible if you are actually attempting to try any of the recipes in the book. Other than the weird trend to have the printed portion of a recipe take up as little space as possible, there is no reason for using a font this size as at least half of the remaining space on the page is blank. In addition and perhaps in an effort to make this book look artistic, much of the type is in low contrast colours such as pale grey or a very pale orange. It is almost impossible to read. Perhaps I am being a cranky old bag but I borrow and buy cookbooks because I actually like to use them to generate more options for great meals. This book has gorgeous photography but it is too difficult to try to read the recipes that go with the pictures. A flat out disappointment. This is another cookbook that is completely unusable in the kitchen. The entire thing is printed in an 8 point font. This is probably one of the most gruesome books I have ever read. I found it quite intense and difficult to read at times but in spite of the hair-raising descriptions contained within this book, it was an excellent read. It told the true stories of soldiers who sustained facial injuries during the WW1 and the incredible efforts to rebuild their faces. Just unbelievable given the technology that was available at the time. Well worth honouring these long dead soldiers and the people who did groundbreaking medical and surgical work to help them by taking the time and having the intestinal fortitude to read this book. This is probably one of the most gruesome books I have ever read. The title of this book leads the reader to expect new ideas and recipes. Sadly, I didn't find that was the case. I knew I was in trouble when quite early on in the book, there was a recipe for toast. Yes, a recipe for toast, as in toasted bread with olive oil and a sprinkling of salt. This is followed by 10 (yes, 10!!! ) ideas for how to top this toast. One of the ideas includes apple slices and cheese. Who needs recipes for this sort of thing? Mind you, I suppose credit has to be given for not including how to smash avocados on to your toasted bread to make the ubiquitous avocado toast. The rest of the book was equally as uninspired. Perhaps the recipes and ideas contained within these pages might be new for someone who really hasn't done much cooking. However, if you actual have done even a bit of cooking, you won't find anything new here at all.The title of this book leads the reader to expect new ideas and recipes. The book contains lots of decadent recipes where a single flavour is interpreted across a range of dessert types. For example, there are cotton candy cookie sandwiches, cupcakes, party squares, cake, cream puffs, macarons and hot chocolate. The ubiquitous salted caramel and cookie dough make similar appearances. If you like cookbooks with pictures of every recipe, this one will fit the bill. There are beautiful close up pictures of each dessert and even some weird ones that involve a close up of a hand holding a dessert while chocolate ganache is poured over the dessert and all over the hand. I suppose this isn't odd when it happens once(and at first seems quite artsy) but it seems pretty contrived when it happens with each of those types of desserts.
If you are a person who likes to bake, then this book will present a challenge that has nothing to do with technique or ingredients. The title of this book implies that it is intended to be used by someone who actually bakes, not just by someone who enjoys perusing cookbooks and looking at lovely food photography. I actually bake. I bake a lot and I'm always on the hunt for new recipes and ideas. This book would be more aptly title "100 Recipes for the Modern Baker who either wants to copy out the recipes by hand, photocopy to enlarge them or have a magnifying lamp handy on the kitchen counter". That is because the font is miniscule. I suspect this is printed in a 4 or 6 font. In a space 1/2" (slightly less than 1cm) there are 4 lines of type. Yes, 4! There are way too many words crammed into such a small space. As well, this book follows what seems to be the current trend of very light print so that the type is grey rather than black. Unless you plan to do any of the things mention above to make the recipes legible enough for use in the kitchen, this book is completely and utterly useless as a tool in your baking kitchen. I can see perfectly well and would not be able to discern what was on the pages of this book if I wanted to actually bake from it. There is also some of this trendy white print on a pale background business going on, in this case, white print on pale pink, rendering tables of contents almost unreadable, especially if light shines on the page. This sort of print silliness is a pet peeve of mine, especially with cookbooks, so my review reflects my frustration with finding something that might be good but not having the patience to copy recipes out in some other format in order to render them usable. The book contains lots of decadent recipes where a single flavour is interpreted across a range of dessert types. Perhaps there are good things in this book. Who can tell? As the previous reviewer mentioned, the type face is so small and compressed that it isn't easy to read. Add to this a somewhat pale type and the text being printed in 2 columns on each page and you have one very difficult to read book. This one will be returned unread. I’ve been a sourdough baker for several years but I just couldn’t quite get this book. The author seems to really be trying to inject sourdough into everything and while these recipes may just not be to my taste, some of them seem plain weird. For example, who needs to make homemade ice cream “sourdough” by adding bits of sourdough rye bread to the ice cream as it is being frozen.....sort of like chocolate chunks might be used? This is the book that ended my love affair with Lee Child and the Jack Reacher books. Reacher has become a crazed person, killing anyone he wants with impunity and these multitudinous killings seem to be the sole focus of the “plot”. The story line was so far fetched and the violence so overwhelmingly prevalent that I didn’t bother to finish the book. If I hadn’t been so aghast at all the shooting, I would have been too busy yawning to have managed to read as much of this drivel as I did. This is the book that ended my love affair with Lee Child and the Jack Reacher books. I’m not sure what all the fuss is about. The first half of the book is all about cutting fruit into small pieces and laying it on top a pie in various designs. For example, kiwis are sliced and then laid in a geometric pattern on the surface of a one crust pie. How do you keep them and the pie filling beneath from becoming soggy if you don’t eat the entire pie right away? The second half of the book uses strips of pie dough to decorate the top. Okay, some of those designs are cool but still, not that cool. If you’d like to know how to make blue or green or red pie dough without food colouring, then this is the book for you.I’m not sure what all the fuss is about.
