Bottom Line: You will understand much more about black holes after you read this book. Drawback: an unneccessarily snarky tone around edges (requires a voice all its own in the audiobook.)

Just look at the cover to see why this 2011 Caldecott Honor Book grabs children's attention: the strong and beautiful painting appeals to children's love of getting their own hands in the clay while introducing them to the compelling figure of Dave--an early American artist, poet, and slave. I use the book to help students learn about the full process of ceramics--from digging the clay to the final firing. The end pages tell what is known of Dave's extant pots and the poetry he wrote on some of them. I wish there had been a brief glossary of ceramic terms (I'm not sure children will understand the role of a "pug mill" in the story or in ceramics, for instance)--but that's a small quibble.Just look at the cover to see why this 2011 Caldecott Honor Book grabs children's attention: the strong and beautiful painting appeals to children's love of getting their own hands in the clay while introducing them to the compelling figure of…

Many NW children are familiar with Chihuly's name and with his glass art. My copy of this book is well-worn; it's a great size for children's hands, and they love both the photographs of Chihuly's seaform vessels and the large reproductions of Chihuly's sketches for the forms. Many of my students are encouraged by this book to draw their own sketches of his glass pieces--the spherical and draped shapes in the glass are excellent practice for any draughtsman-in-training. I also love for the students to see artists at work in their studios, and this book includes a lively color spread of Chihuly working on a painting/sketch in his studio with a wall of other pieces visible in the backgroundMany NW children are familiar with Chihuly's name and with his glass art. There are several children's books with Degas and his drawings and paintings of dancers as their subject--this is the best of those because of the honor it gives to the dedication of the dancers as well as to the dedication of Degas. The importance of practice is the theme that draws the work of both types of artists together here. Degas' techniques are also well-described, as are the changes that his failing sight brought to his art. Each reproduction is accompanied by an informative blurb that further enhances all that can be learned while looking at Degas' lovely art works. There are several children's books with Degas and his drawings and paintings of dancers as their subject--this is the best of those because of the honor it gives to the dedication of the dancers as well as to the dedication of Degas. The reproductions of Lichtenstein's cartoon-inspired art works are the immediate draw of this book for many youngsters, but the extensively researched text also provides older youths with insights into how a child who loves art becomes a mature working artist (including schooling, shows, jobs, setbacks, breakthroughs, and historical and contemporary inspirations). Rubin has also written books of comparable depth on artists Thiebaud, Warhol, Hopper, and O'Keeffe, but this one on Lichtenstein has the most "curb appeal."The reproductions of Lichtenstein's cartoon-inspired art works are the immediate draw of this book for many youngsters, but the extensively researched text also provides older youths with insights into how a child who loves art becomes a mature…

I love the Prestel Adventures in Art series for the beautiful reproductions of the works of important artists that they make available for children. The value of the text within the series is not all of the same quality, though, and this is not one of the best. The text here is mainly "retelling" of what is happening in the paintings and speculations about what the subjects might be thinking. Skip the text and just enjoy the paintings.I love the Prestel Adventures in Art series for the beautiful reproductions of the works of important artists that they make available for children. The artists affiliated under the name "Der Blaue Reiter" (Alexej Jawlensky, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, August Macke, Franz Marc, Gabriele Munter, and Marianne von Werefkin), used color with expressionistic and symbolic meaning that readily appeals to children. Animals, people, landscapes, as well as abstract subjects, are rendered with vibrant non-representational color and energetic brushwork that affirms children's own expressive artistic impulses. The text combines historical details of the artistic friendship that united these artists with vigorous explorations of and comparisons between several of their art works, which are presented in excellent reproductions.
Prestel's Adventures in Art series forms the heart of my classroom art library because of their beautiful reproductions, but the texts are of varying quality. The best in the series are this one, I Wish I Didn't Have to Sleep (Keith Haring), Animal Dreams (Paul Klee), Dreaming Pictures (Paul Klee), A Day in Japan with Hokusai, Visiting Vincent van Gogh, Artist in the Desert (O'Keeffe), Gustav Klimt: Silver, Gold, and Precious Stones, A Day with Picasso, Frida Kahlo: The Artist in the Blue House, and Marc Chagall: Life is a Dream. The artists affiliated under the name "Der Blaue Reiter" (Alexej Jawlensky, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, August Macke, Franz Marc, Gabriele Munter, and Marianne von Werefkin), used color with expressionistic and symbolic meaning that readily…

Children enjoy the depictions of both noble and peasant life in and around the castle created by the Limbourg brothers and other artists for the Duc de Berry in the late 14th century. The exquisitely detailed calendar paintings of the Duc de Berry's book of hours are reproduced here in a slightly larger format than the original paintings which makes it easy to appreciate the fine craftsmanship of the artists. I wish Sister Wendy Beckett's text spoke more of the artistic tradition to which the work belongs and the techniques of the paintings, but after a two-page introduction, the rest of the text simply "retells" the events of each painting with a bit of moralizing tagged on. Until a better book comes along, the reproductions here are reason enough to share this book with art-loving children.Children enjoy the depictions of both noble and peasant life in and around the castle created by the Limbourg brothers and other artists for the Duc de Berry in the late 14th century. Wow. I so admire what Serres has done here. Too often, we only share "pretty" art with children, but even very young children are aware that there are horrors in the world. To help children understand the role art can play in responding to the terrors of life is really a gift many children need to be given. At the heart Serres book is a powerful discussion of Picasso's artistic process in the creation of Guernica, rich with reproductions of his studies, photographs of the mural in process (taken by Dora Maar) and a four-page fold out of the mural. Serres pursues the question that Picasso pursued: "How to make an image more powerful than the blast of 50 tonnes of bombs?" and helps children to understand the need to create such an image, as well as the "answers" Picasso discarded and those he accepted. Surrounding that "heart," and with an admirable economy of words, Serres sets Picasso and his career within historical, social, and art-historical context. A first rate book for children and adults.Wow. I so admire what Serres has done here. The artists that matter most in some children's worlds are the illustrators of the books they love--though they rarely think consciously of those contributors to their imaginary worlds as artists. This is a wonderful book to awaken that awareness. Each four-page layout in this rich book offers not only a letter about the illustrator's art, but also a photo of the illustrator as a child, a childhood artwork by the illustrator, a photo of the illustrator in-studio or working outside, images of the illustrator's most well-known works, and a self-portrait. Once they are familiar with the format, children enjoy learning about individual artists and comparing them--though the younger the child, the more necessary an adult partner is for maneuvering through the book (each spread has a fold-out page). The artists that matter most in some children's worlds are the illustrators of the books they love--though they rarely think consciously of those contributors to their imaginary worlds as artists. Not your standard "How to" book--there are many unexpected turns, some of which perplex, and some of which delight.
