I loved it. It got me in the first few pages. That doesn't often happen.

A MUST READ! I read this book about 20 years ago and wish I could read it again. It is a great story, and deserves to be read and re-read. I wish it were in LARGE TYPE so I could read it again. I think you will give it 5 stars...ojw

I can't imagine why this book has only 3 stars. It's lovely and beautifully written (and happens to be one of my favorite, all-time works of literary fiction). And to think this was HD's debut novel that was published at the age of 74!

Read this years ago, always had a soft spot for this story. I felt it was a gentle story in a harsh world. Wish it came in Large Type.

Harriet Doerr wrote this, her first novel, at the age of about 70. Reading it is like drinking very cool, clean water on a hot summer day. It is one of my top five books of fiction. Definitely worth your time!
