Beautifully written yet difficult to read autobiography that pulls at your heart while your head can’t quite process the revelations. Powerful and inspiring I recommend this book but know you will be changed by reading it.

"Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a (s)mall Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and…

Beautiful book still incredibly true now. You will laugh, you will cry, you will be angry and in awe through the story of Maya's early life. She writes though her eyes at each period of her life. She is so true to herself and the world.…

I started out by loving this book for its clarity, honesty — and in many places, its beautiful language; the mark of a poet. But I liked it less and less the farther I read. Angelou is at her best where she celebrates the settled (albeit…

This book is not easy to read, but the writing is powerful and the story is important.

I first heard about this book years ago, and have been meaning to read it ever since Angelou died. Finally, I found it at George Daly’s mountain house when we were there for the weekend. I read the whole thing that weekend. It was…

I don't read very much non-fiction so when one of the goodreads groups created a post for non-fiction November I thought this would be the perfect time. I bought this book last year while browsing in one of my favorite thrift shops. Maya…

Very raw with beautiful prose. This is a challenging read and would be appropriate for college students and some high schoolers certainly, but I am glad I didn't read it at such a tender age. I think her experience is important and…

4.5/5 This is one of my first forays into non-fiction, and I'm glad to say that I have picked up this book. Angelou's writing is full of life; you can really tell who she is by the allusions and by the attitude within the words. There…

This honest, straightforward, tell-it-like-it-is autobiography was written like a story -- a poetic, beautifully-written, tragic-but-she-is-resilient, story. (The memory she has! It blew me away.) The story begins with a young Maya growing…

"It was awful to be Negro and have no control over my life. It was brutal to be young and already trained to sit quietly and listen to charge brought against my color with no chance of defense. We should all be dead, I thought."

This book was my introduction into Maya Angelou's works and i couldn't be happier for the experience. She truly is a master of painting not only the picture, but the emotions of her stories as well.
