The reader with an interest in the Appalachian Trail could do worse than this sometimes funny, often thoughtful, occasionally borderline caustic reflection on one man's trip through some eight hundred miles of mountainous terrain. Bryson…

Bill Bryson is my favorite author and I think this is most people's first introduction to him and his humor. His comedy isn't for everyone, but he's honest and insightful, and this book is a treasure.

A hilarious and informative book. I really appreciated how Bryson mixed a little bit of history throughout the book. Bryson's sense of humor made the more informative moments interesting, while still leaving the reader with important…

This is an interesting, well-written book but on page 147 of the e-book there is a quite disturbing story he tells.

Easy read with great descriptions of the countryside, history of the Appalachian Trail, & humorous situations throughout. I cannot totally agree with some of the dietary choices described within the book, but those are all personal…

A guy goes for a walk in the woods on the Appalachian Trail. Doesn't sound like a good time, nor meaningful other than to earn bragging rights. There's mining and other forms of environmental damage to areas traveled; not uplifting.

Entertaining and has some good Appalachian history and ecology facts mixed in with is own story of hiking the AT. I enjoy hiking and I liked hiking vicariously through this writer. It was written in the 90s, though, and it is somewhat…

After seeing the movies years ago I decided it was time to read the book. A hilarious book in which I heard Nick Nolte's voice in my head had me laughing out load. It was also sprinkled with great history and geography of the USA.

So funny - and yet a commentary on the losses of our world in terms of plant and animal life.

There is some picturesque description here, if you can find it buried among all the snobbishness, sexism, and fat-shaming.

My absolute favorite of Bryson's books- and I love a lot of his work. You just cannot beat the humor of his sidekick, Katz. The situations in which these two adventurers find themselves in on the trail and in these tiny America towns…

This book sucked me in like a novel. It's a great tale about the author's summer hiking the Appalachian trail with his friend Katz, both equally out of shape and pretty much hiking beginners. This book made me laugh at every turn, with…

Contriving to hike the Appalachian Trail, Bryson turns his droll wit on America. Joining him is the friend with whom he hitchhiked Europe in "Neither Here Nor There", now somewhat estranged and definitely out of shape. Together they are…

A real half-and-half book. An extremely funny and entertaining half when he was talking about the preparation, the hike, and the people he was with (or met) on the trail coupled with an almost boring textbook half telling the history of…
