Our bookclub's selection for July 22 turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Story is about Margo whose mother left and she was raised by her father until he was killed by Margo's uncle. Margo went looking for love in all the wrong places…

The story of Margo, left by her mother, learning about the natural world from her father and grandfather. I enjoyed that part of the book. She has many things happen to her in her life but never plays “victim”. The River itself becomes a…

The traumatized and unemotive protagonist voice of Margo carried this story well; she was a bit strange as a character but I think her aloofness added to the story, as opposed to being a flaw in the author's ability to craft a character. I…

I love to see Margo's growth over the novel. If you're not paying attention, you'll miss it. I've read this book a couple of times now and love it.

This is a good book club selection; beautifully written and lyrical. I found Margo and her later day river travels to be reminiscent of Tom and Huck's discovery adventures.

A strange and compelling read, I never warmed to Margo or any of the characters, except the dogs, yet I was fascinated and could not stop turning the pages. Beautifully written the words flow very much like the river, lyrical, almost…

A compelling story of a teeange girl who is forced to make her own way in the world. Margo is a complex character and the book deals with many issues. Not a light hearted book but very worthy of reading.

Very richly-told, evocative story. Like other readers who have commented, I didn't feel a strong connection to Margo, but that didn't make the book any less enjoyable, somehow. I think it's because although I could not relate to how…

At first, I kind of enjoyed the book, but I'm getting really tired of her skinning fish alive (because she thinks they don't feel pain - what?! are you serious?), shooting deer after deer, and dealing with revenge issues. And, honestly,…

This book was a haunting beautiful read. A great story about an independent girl falling through life. As she leaps from man to man she begins to slowly understanding who she wants to be. The storyline flows like a river and was a very…

I believe the river was the main character, all others, just players in this story. Beautifully written tale. Campbell has a wonderful gift of using words to paint a picture. I enjoyed this immensely.

A young girl survives alone in the countryside, making a life for herself living on a river Michigan. The author creates a marvelous sense of place and carves out a memorable character.

I really enjoyed reading this book, even though I felt no direct connection to Margo or any other character in the story. That said, I did like the connections between Margo and the various characters in the story, especially those who…

Loved this -- very very compelling. The book was due so I went and bought it -- will donate it to the library! More patrons should have a chance to read this. Margo is a fascinating primitive -- she illumines our civilized world by…
