This was a sad movie about the 12 years life of a free Africa-America man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. It was well-acted but with many heartbreaking and torture scenes.

A Very heartbreaking beautiful and tragic look into slavery. It was a very importnt movie with many heartbreaking scenes, many intense ones as well, as it looked into the abuse and treatment of human beings as slaves. It is an important…

Absolutely fantastic film!...
However, it's rather traumatic to watch (excessive brutality!) and has a very authentic look to it...
The writing, acting and direction is, off the charts good/great!...

There is a lot of violence in the movies of Steve McQueen that I've watched. This is not to minimalize the violence against Black people during the time of slavery, or any other time. This movie demonstrates the huge amount of hatred some…

"John Ridley's and Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave is a compelling film but it is not a courageous or honest film—not if truth matters. Ridley and McQueen shrink from portraying Solomon Northrup's experience and attitude toward slavery in…

Brutal but fact-based story of a free man, kidnapped and sold into slavery, who uses his wits to survive a very bad situation. Excellent portrayal, too, of the miseries of the white plantation class, including a well-meaning but…

Devastated. It's a good thing I didn't see this at the movie house, I would have had to walk out from sobbing beyond any movie I've ever seen. If this doesn't move you to compassion for your fellow human beings, goddamn it, then nothing…
I have tried t watch this movie twice. It is too heartbreaking for me. Human beings should not be treated the way slaves were treated. There should be NO slaves, ever!

The movie is well-acted, and conveys the brutality of plantation life, while showing the human qualities of the people Solomon Northrup knew. If you are alive today, this movie will best convey the conditions and attitudes of Antebellum…

The subject matter is an important, yet shameful part of American history, so I wanted to like this movie. But I found it long and dull. I ended up fast forwarding through the last quarter of the movie.

This is an incredibly difficult movie to watch. We cannot discuss American history or worry about 'Making America Great Again' if slavery is part of American history. This movie proves that America was never great for many in this country.

So, I liked the movie. It was moving, it was a well produced, but that's all I got from it: a movie about slavery, not much "deeper meaning". To me, the movie seemed sugarcoated to the reality of slavery.
I won't say it's a must see,…
