A classic! We don't have summer adventures like this any more: two children take the train on their own to upstate New York, where wide-ranging explorations in the woods lead them (and their cousins) to a dry lake, where they meet an elderly brother and sister pair and explore the tumbledown houses. Fantastic as a readaloud; the audiobook is great as well.

My Mother-Daughter Book Club read this for our July 2013 meeting. Mothers and daughters enjoyed the lovely, descriptive language and the tale of a secret place where cousins befriend 2 elderly naturalists. I read and loved this book as a child in the 60's and it is still a great read.
