Set in the English Lake District in the period between the two World Wars, a group of children have fun sailing, camping, fishing, swimming and enjoying piratical exploits on an uncharted lake.

The book that started it all in the 1930s. It introduces the main cast of characters, the camp on Wild Cat Island, and the able-bodied catboat Swallow.

I just read this with my 7 year old. My 5 years olds also enjoyed listening in at times. It is a great book! We can't wait to read the next one.

Also from the BBC list of top 100 books, this is the first book in a series by Ransome geared for children. Following four children in the Walker family on their summer holidays as they make camp on a small island and sail their vessel "The Swallow", this book was a window back to the happy time of childhood fantasy. If I was 12 or 13 reading the book I would have rated it 5* most definitely.

One of my favourite stories from childhood. The language is a little dated now in some respects but it still a really engrossing read. I spent a blissful summer having recieved this in my xmas stocking and wanted to have a sailing boat from then on!

This is an outstanding book, the first in several series by Arthur Ransome depicting the joy, freedom and adventure of childhood. The setting for Swallows and Amazons is in the Lake Country of northern England while other books by Ransome are set in the Norfolk Broads and surrounding areas. They provide a wonderful introduction to any child interested in sailing and adventure.
