Opinion

From Library Staff

One of the few Jim Thompson novels accurately transferred to film, this excellent con-game classic is seedy, grimy, and full of slithery performances. Anjelica Huston, John Cusack, and Annette Bening verbalize the story in what is almost a stage play of family business and trust...or lack thereof... Read More »

This film really IS as good as the book. Seeing these con women in action provides entertainment galore!

The cast is amazing, this was Annette Bening's breakout role which made her a star and her chemistry with John Cusack is smoking hot. Anjelica Houston plays her character with a stylish hard edge. The script is also very good but if only the film had a different director, Frears keeps everything one noted, almost dull.

I don't understand the fuss! Yes, a phenomenal cast with Bening, Cusack, and the amazing Huston, but look what they give them to work with: nothing but a poor unredeeming film. Pacing is not done well. It's just a pseudo-noir flick with very little substance, except that -- surprise! -- the life of a swindler, grifter, scam artist, what have you, is a depressing one filled with mistrust at every step. Not worth the watch. It just makes me believe that I only like Scorsese's work on CASINO, GOODFELLAS, THE DEPARTED, and HUGO. Obviously not a fan of his work here as a producer. I wouldn't recommend it.

I like Cusack. He's an offbeat actor, and I've enjoyed most of his work. He's his typical deadpan, cunning self here at 24 years old, and it works. He and the two femme fatale leads (Huston and Bening) pull off this Scorsese produced neo-noir pretty well.
