Add a CommentI Am Legend – ‘Where it all began.’ As previously reported it is not at all like the movie starring Will Smith. I’m glad I read it but apart from the first story, the other shorter stories were confusing at times. I would not give this book my highest endorsement. Doctor-at-Bass! T. A
The Horror Writers Association has awarded "I am Legend" the Vampire Novel of the Century Award.
My comment is only for "I Am Legend". I didn't read the other short stories in this collection. I can understand the importance of the story being the first of its kind, which was probably cool when it came out in the 50s, but from a modern standpoint, the science is plain dumb. Doesn't measure up to its cool title.
I didn't actually realize this was a collection of stories until I went to pick it up. I was really only interested in reading I Am Legend, so my rating is based on that. It was okay. I'm glad I read it, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to anyone. I'll give it a good solid "meh".
Completely the best book in the world.MUST READ!
The 2007 version of the book includes several short short stories after I am Legend. They really aren't that good, and have nothing to do with the first story. It's not bad, just very much a book of the 50's. Any of the movie versions are better.
Don't go reading this expecting it to be like the movie. It's an usual take on the age old idea of certain horror monsters (I don't want to give it away). I found it amusing but the novelty wore off after awhile. The short story and the movie are as different as night and day. The only thing they hold incomon is the title. One is about hoplessnes and the quiet acquiescence of inevitability; the other is just another post-apocalyptic action movie. Guess which one is which. The rest of the short stories are pretty predictable; Dalls come to like and kill people, murder and mayhem etc. The stories are actually kinda boring after awhile.
Really good movie with true expressions (despite the plot being fictional). It was very moving in the end.
