Opinion

From Library Staff

What starts out as a suspenseful recounting of child abduction evolves into a story of Robin Kerr growing up in the wilds of the Ozarks, on a remote, inaccessible mountain-top, where she is kept company by numerous animal companions and the ghost of a young boy.

This story of a kidnapper who takes a young girl to live with him in a remote cabin includes both a ghost and a dog that is able to communicate with, and comfort the girl.

A compelling story, but a pronounced element of sexism is disturbing, as is the blend of magical realism and fairy tale with plot elements involving child sexual assault and an idealization of victimhood.
