1000 years after a great war destroyed civilization, a young princess must keep it from happening again. A beautiful and epic Japanese anime full of mutant creatures and decayed technology.

I never saw Nausicaa when I was younger so I won't have have any sort of bias due to nostalgia, and seeing how Studio Ghibli wasn't even properly formed when the film was released in 1984, I didn't go in with high expectations because it is not a Studio Ghibli movie. And as you can probably infer by my rating I thought the film was rather average. Unlike in Miyazaki's later film Princess Mononoke, the environmental message in this film is incredibly heavy handed and not very subtle, where as in Mononoke, there was no clear cut hero or villain (except for Jigo, he was more of a self serving free agent who didn't choose any side save his own), just two extremes fighting for what they thought was best for everyone, and while that sentiment is touched on here, the film's antagonists seem to make no secret their malice and apathy towards the people they claim to be helping. That's my biggest problem with the film, other problems include the awkward exposition (esp. during the first 15-20 minutes), the spotty dialog, the lack of complexity or depth in the characters and so forth, but even though the character of Nausicaa isn't that developed, she still stands as an excellent role model for kids (much like the character Kiki in Kiki's Delivery Service), despite my gripes there are elements in the film that make it worth viewing. The animation is spectacular. Miyazaki has such a talent for creating worlds and atmosphere, even if the film is based on a previous work (The film is actually based on a manga that Miyazaki wrote in order to get the film produced). Also take note the music, this is Miyazaki's forst collaboration with Joe Hisaishi and it sounds wonderful, grand, and epic, matching the creative setting to a T, except maybe for this one track that sounds like a chorus of children, that was kind of grating. All in all while Nausicaa is not a terrible film, when you consider Miyazaki's other films, it's not quite up to snuff. The story is half cooked, the characters aren't very developed the writing is very clunky and awkward, it just seems to me like a small foot in the door for Miyazaki as a director to make way for his masterpieces.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. Not too bad---good performance. Very predictable but still entertaining.

I thought it was OK and my younger sister LOVED IT!!!! This movie really depends on your tastes. If u enjoyed Princess Mononoke (which I personally have not seen), get this. Perfect match. But if you have younger children in your family who don't like to see blood, explosions, or complicated plots, try another. I was kind of confused with all the bug-monsters and violence and poison and who's against who and what the point of the story is, but then again I've only seen it once so I haven't had time to sort everything out in my mind. But don't take my word for it. This is an artistic and creative movie, everything I'd expect from a Ghibli film!!!!!!!!

As someone who used to watch alot of anime, the only ones for which I have the time nowadays are the epic ones from the
famed Studio Ghibli. It's a good sign if when the movie is over, that I wished that the whole thing was longer so that I could stay immersed in this imaginative world. I would very much love to one day see a Ghibli film that expands upon the desolate feel that I got from the opening scene of this one.

I think I read that this is actually Ghibli's first film. Not bad considering it was made in the eighties. Objectionable content: Some of the bug-monsters bleed, but it's blue.

This is a beautifully animated film with a powerful message about tolerance and properly caring for the Earth. However, it does contain many violent scenes. I would recommend it for children ten or older as I don't think it would hold the attention of a younger audience. It is a fabulous film though.

Probably one of my least favorite Miyazaki films. I did like it, but not so good for a child, my son lost interest half way through.

An amazing movie with a very powerful message. Definitely a must- watch for Miyazaki fans or any anime fans as a matter of fact.

This movie is so cool to watch because there is action, suspense, and a little romance. But i liked it because it made me think.
