Item Details

Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this spellbinding novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby. Sethe, its protagonist, was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe's new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved.

Opinion

From Library Staff

This book is about the repercussions of slavery for the people who survived it and it features a terrifying baby ghost. Morrison is an amazing, evocative writer, and in this audiobook she reads her own work very, very well.

This is a great book on the page, and that's how I read it the first time. But it turns out that Toni Morrison is, miraculously, as good a reader as she is a writer. This book is about the repercussions of slavery for the people who survived it and features a terrifying baby ghost.
