Clary Fray's apparently normal life takes a magically adventurous turn when her mother disappears and she discovers a world of occult danger. A 2013 release of a motion picture of City of Bones is scheduled. First in a series.

This book was fantastic. I loved all the characters with Jace being at the top. The movie is also excellent, however, not sure if there will be a number 2 movie yet.

Like a few others said, this book is so-so. The plot is exciting and action-packed, yet the writing seemed almost mediocre, in comparison to other Epic YA fantasy novels. The story revolves around 16 year old Clary Fray who switches her life around to become a shadow-hunter. Filled with angels, demon, warlocks and more, this book is up to the brim with twists and suspense. Along the way, she meets lots of new people (and demons) and learns to get used to her new lifestyle without her mother there to protect her.
The plot was well developed, but still slightly predictable. It seems like the author had loads of amazing ideas and ways to make the book seem “more interesting”, but was unable to properly follow through with most of them. The book seemed to be written in the style of a younger, middle grade novel, with aspects of young adults. The vocabulary was a little basic and some of the character’s development and behavioral habits considering they were all above the age of 16. All in all though, it was a worthwhile and interesting book that did keep you latched on, and the ending left you wanting more. The rest of the series is better developed, in my opinion, so reader’s definetly won’t be left disappointed. The book did remind me a bit of the Harry Potter, or even the Percy Jackson books, but it was still slightly different. I'd recommend this to anyone between the ages of 12 to 15 who is looking for a new read.

I love this book!!!!! I can't wait for the next book

I think this can be worthwhile, but i think that this plot is kinda boring since alot of writers will do a plot like this. Here's a suggestion, read more stuff from if you like hunger games section, about 4/5 of the stuff i read there is interesting, and their plots are really good, i suggest reading the divergent series, or the legend/prodigy/champion series by marie lu.

This book is a non-putter downer, if you know what I mean. I cant [couldn't] put it down!! And for all of you that thinks it isn't worth reading, at least give it a try.

A somewhat stupid protagonist, who turns on people when she thinks she can get away it and completely ignores common sense etc. Utterly pedestrian and tiresome. I'm 1/3 into it and wondering if it's worth finishing. The premise is interesting but the "heroine" is almost unbearably conventional and average.

Jace: "I can't believe you've been stuffing him with fish again. He's looking distinctly podgy."
Isabelle: "He does not look podgy. Besides, none of the rest of you ever eat anything."
Jace: "If you knew how to cook, maybe I would eat."
Isabelle: "WHAT did you just say?"
Jace: "I said I'm going to look for a snack to eat."
Isabelle: "That's what I thought you said."

"That's why when major badasses greet each other in movies, they don't say anything, they just nod. The nod means, 'I am a badass and I recognize that you, too, are a badass,' but they don't say anything because they're Wolverine and Magneto and it would mess up their vibe to explain." - Simon Lewis

“Well, when I was five, I wanted my mother to let me go around and around inside a dryer with the clothes,” Clary said. “The difference is, she didn’t let me.”
“Probably because going around and around in a dryer can be fatal,” Jace pointed out, “whereas pasta is rarely fatal. Unless Isabelle makes it.”

When clary enters the pandemonium club she hardly expects to witness a murder, especially one that only she seems to be able to see. Beginning with that night Clary gets plunged in to a hidden world of shadow hunters and downworlders. Starting with the disappearance of her mom and moving to the even more extreme, this book will leave you dying to read the whole series!
