1st of a series and right up there with the Harry Potter! I couldn't wait to read the rest of the series. Michael Scott has a great imagination! He mixes all the right elements, magics and creatures in a fabulous story. This is a must read!

Nicholas Flamel, owner of the famous philosopher's stone, lives with his wife of several centuries in New York, where he runs a bookshop. 15 year-old Josh gets a job working for him, and his twin sister gets a job across the street in a cafe. Both jobs end early as the twins get caught up in a confrontation between Nicholas Flamel and the evil magician John Dee. This is a fun and exciting series, but kind of confusing if you know about different mythologies, because this book mixes them all together, with ancient Greek, Roman, Celtic,Hebrew, Norse and Egyptian heroes, villains and gods all sort of interacting as if they were all part of the same story told different ways.

I came to this series because of the name Nicholas Flamel (which I had heard of from the Harry Potter series). I enjoyed the melding of ancient magics with modern technology. After waiting several years for all the books in the series, it is strange to look back and realize that the action of the story takes place over 7-8 DAYS (give or take a few milleniums). Recommended for fantasy fiction/mythology readers.

I'm just finally getting around to this one even though it's been out for a while, but the series has been a regular request by young readers, many of whom seem very excited about it, so a couple of weeks ago when I wanted something to listen to while working around the house I decided to give it a try. It didn't really excite me, and I've been sitting on it all week trying to find inspiration for something to say in a review. This afternoon I decided to gain a little momentum by seeing what others have said in their reviews, and I can see I'm not alone in my lack of enthusiasm. It would be a two-star, "it's okay" rating from my experience and the writing in general, but I'm giving it an extra star because it does have good appeal for the right readers, which I've seen as a librarian.

This book is about two fifteen-year-old twins, Sophie, and Josh, who are suddenly thrust into a magical world they know nothing about. Suddenly they are told that they are the ones who fulfill the prophecy, and that there is somebody named John Dee, an alchemist, who will stop at nothing to prevent the prophecy from happening. Luckily, they have one person on their side...Nicholas Flamel and his wife support the twins, while they go through a rollercoaster of problems, all because of a prophecy and a book. An ancient book that holds the secret formulas for eternal life.

"No, you're not," he said very quietly, his french accent suddenly pronounced."You are the prisoners of circumstance, of coincidence and chance... if you believe in such things." - Nicholas Flamel, Page 196
