In both of the realms of either fantasy, as well as reality, Pan's Labyrinth certainly managed to excel and deliver some of the finest story-telling that I've had the pleasure of experiencing in a mighty long time.

Believe me, this was one unique WW2/Alice-In-Wonderland story like no other.

Bizarre, magical, cruel and treacherous, here director Guillermo Del Toro proves himself, beyond a doubt, to be a true master of his craft as he expertly intertwines 2 stories of quite opposing genres and, as a result, produces a beautifully realized film that's very worthy of all of its praise.

From its startling visual excellence, to its first-rate cast, to its heart-breaking story, to its exceptional soundtrack - Pan's Labyrinth triumphs on all of these levels, and beyond.

Here's a big-budget movie whose euro-dollars were very well spent, where its story was well thought out, and, thankfully, (because it wasn't a Hollywood production) this picture wasn't ruined by the over-bearing taint of that country's movie industry.

I give 3 big cheers to this film's 3 stand-out performances - Ivana Baquero (as Ofelia), Sergi Lopez (as Captain Vidal), and Maribel Verdu (as Mercedes).

Warning! - This film contains some very graphic and brutal violence! It has a "restricted" rating.

One of the best films of the 21st century, and it would surely hold its own on an all time list as well. A very dark and adult story of man's inhumanity to man wrapped in the clothing of a gothic fairy tale. Unforgettable.

A film with an entertaining mix of "reality", the Spanish Civil War, and a fantasy, a child's dream of a another world in the underground filled with beauty.

Ivas, are you basing your review on that single remark? How arbitrary.

In the introduction to the movie director Deltoro remarks that the movie almost cost him his life. I cannot see how it would. Perhaps I wasn't the intended audience.

A spellbinding blend of drama and fantasy, flawlessly written and directed by Gulliermo del Toro. Captivating. Particularly impressive was twelve year old Ivana Baquero as the doe-eyed Ofelia -- my heart went out to her. La película es muy buena! FIVE STARS.

A great fairy tale for adults embedded in the dark reality of Francoist Spain. It's sophisticated because of its simplicity: good versus evil from beginning to end. I absolutely loved it. It's so immersive that I completely forgot I was reading subtitles; it may sound ridiculous, but it takes a great deal to do such a thing. Highly recommended for all adults who still long for the tinest dose of whimsy but with a touch of darkness, too.

Pan: "A long time ago, in the underground realm, where there are no lies or pain, there lived a Princess who dreamed of the human world. She dreamed of blue skies, soft breezes, and sunshine. One day, eluding her keepers, the Princess escaped. Once outside, the brightness blinded her and erased every trace of the past from her memory. She forgot who she was and where she came from. Her body suffered cold, sickness, and pain. Eventually, she died. However, her father, the King, always knew that the Princess' soul would return, perhaps in another body, in another place, at another time. And he would wait for her, until he drew his last breath, until the world stopped turning..."

"Many, many years ago in a sad, faraway land, there was an enormous mountain made of rough, black stone. At sunset, on top of that mountain, a magic rose blossomed every night that made whoever plucked it immortal. But no one dared go near it because its thorns were full of poison. Men talked amongst themselves about their fear of death, and pain, but never about the promise of eternal life. And every day, the rose wilted, unable to bequeath its gift to anyone... forgotten and lost at the top of that cold, dark mountain, forever alone, until the end of time."
