Item Details

Hang on for the ride: with characteristic poetry and pluck, Barbara Kingsolver and her family sweep readers along on their journey away from the industrial-food pipeline to a rural life in which they vow to buy only food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves, or learn to live without it. Their good-humored search yields surprising discoveries about turkey sex life and overly zealous zucchini plants, en route to a food culture that's better for the neighborhood and also better on the table. Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle makes a passionate case for putting the kitchen back at the center of family life, and diversified farms at the center of the American diet.

Opinion

From Library Staff

Barbara Kingsolver is a splendid writer, and, it turns out, a very good reader. I loved this nonfiction account of how her family raised most of their own food at their Virginia farm for a year.

The rooster crowing at the beginning of each disc will hopefully wake the listener / reader to the health promoting wisdom of supporting local food production. The CD's are an entertaining and educational view of the food growing experience as narrated by the author and her family members. They admit they were not experts - just a family with a dream. They openly express enthusiasm, self doubts, recipes, and admirable persistence as they pursue their one year goal to produce almost everything their family would eat that year. What a wonderful example of self reliance plus the importance of community. This could be an amazing addition to a school health curriculum.

This is a fabulous book for anyone interested in healthy eating and food production.
