Item Details

They have names like Barmy Bernie, Daft Donald, and Steamin' Sammy. They like lager (in huge quantities), the Queen, football clubs (especially Manchester United), and themselves. Their dislike encompasses the rest of the known universe, and England's soccer thugs express it in ways that range from mere vandalism to riots that terrorize entire cities. Now Bill Buford, editor of the prestigious journal Granta, enters this alternate society and records both its savageries and its sinister allure with the social imagination of a George Orwell and the raw personal engagement of a Hunter Thompson.

A brilliantly written account of not only soccer hooliganism, but collective behavior and the psychology of crowds. Still fresh over 20 years later. Highly recommended.

The subject is interesting and the book is well-written. It would have been more enjoyable if the author had treated the people he was writing about better. Despite how well he was received and treated by the football clubs, he treats them as if they were some kind of inferior species.

Very well-written, with a great story to tell. a fascinating look at an ultra-violent subculture.
