From Library Staff

This is kind of a classic for Western Oregon and Washington. It has a lot of details and could be a reference book long after your first garden.

This book was amazing. If you are scientifically minded, you will appreciate the way the author systematically breaks down how he does things, and why.

As returning to gardening after 40 years, in a different climate zone, and with space limited to a 30 sq ft, gardening in the NW was a whole venture for me. This book was an engaging read that provided an easily-acquired baseline knowledge of the geology, ecology, and horticulture of the NW that any gardener would require for the most productive and sustainable results that supports and improves the enviroment. Even though written with the large plot gardener in mind, it provided neat tips and tricks that were scalable, or inspired brainstorming.

The information was so good, that I am not sure how the comment in a previous post about lack of pictures is meaningful. I do know that you will wait all summer on hold for one of the 57 copies to come back into circulation.

This was one of the most helpful gardening books I've read. It is written specifically for our region. It even has an organic fertilizer recipe that you can make yourself which addresses the mineral deficiencies of our rained on and leached out soils.

Not very many pictures (the ones that are present are black and white illustrations, not pictures), but a lot of information is contained within this book!
