If you haven't read anything by Diana Wynne Jones, then what are you waiting for? This book spoofs every fantasy written since The Lord of the Rings, and is an enjoyable story in its own right.

This parody of the sword and sorcery genre is not only funny but also a commentary on commercialism and greed.

The idea of a fantasy world where real wizards and dragons are forced to act the part and put on shows for the benefit of an off-world tour is inspired, but the story was a bit too ambitious in scope. It was hard to keep track of all the balls in the air-- especially with so many griffin characters and subplots within subplots.

"I've had two little yellow cat-birds and one bigger brown one, and a stick-man and a stick-woman, and a little woman with yellow hair, and now you. Haven't any of you ever seen a dragon before?"
