As bloodhounds track her frantic race toward the mountains, she is tormented by mad visions and by the knowledge that her two ruthless brothers-in-law are in pursuit, determined to avenge their younger brother's death. Responding to little more than the primitive fight for life, the widow retreats ever deeper into the wilderness-and into the wilds of her own mind-encountering an unforgettable cast of eccentrics along the way. With the stunning prose and captivating mood of great works like Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain or early Cormac McCarthy, Gil Adamson's intoxicating debut novel weds a brilliant literary style to the gripping tale of one woman's desperate escape.

Add a CommentGreat writing and wonderful story with Canadian connection. Very much in the style of the Englishman's Boy. There is poetry in the descriptions and the vocabulary. This mysterious woman chased by the menacing twin brothers of her dead husband is desparate to save herself. We follow her flight through the old West and stop in Frank, AB. Loosely based on a true story, the author has brought the whole thing to life. Loved it.
Outstanding writing and a brilliant story beautifully told. An absolute page-turner; rollicking good read.
A suspenseful story about a woman on the run from vindictive twins, set in the west of the early 1900's. Adamson is a poet, and it shows in the writing.
Gripping story, gorgeously written.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book once I got into it. You must let yourself get to where she heads into the mountains, then, I couldn't put it down. The writing is wonderful, I felt I was right there with her through all of it. Highly recommend it.
Simply a great book. Set in the Wild West with a cast of very interesting characters. You won't want to put it down until you find out whether or not the main character survives all her perils!

This is a well written book, so much so, that I found it hard to read because of the subject matter. It is not to my taste, however I am sure that anyone else would enjoy it.
Fairly decent. It picked up momentum as I read.
Couldn't get into the story. I didn't feel for her at all and couldn't relate. The only positive note was that the writing style was excellant - mature, clear, and was the only part that made me want to read more. I will try Gil's next book.
