This is a favorite of mine, so often read, the spines and pages are held together with whatever was on hand. And I own two copies. I'd flag this saga as one of the must reads to anyone with an interest in a well-built fantasy world. It is primarily a military fantasy, with training, battles, tactics, strategy and lost friends...but it's also more than that. It's family outside of blood relations, friends you can count out—and those you thought you could. It's a well built society from commoner to noble, soldier to artisan, different cultures and beliefs, gods, goddesses and paladins, knights in armour (shinning and black). It's honour, committment, good deeds and bad, good intentions and pain. It's a fantasticaly well written tale. And the girl's the hero. How's them apples!
