Opinion

From Library Staff

I am cheating a bit here, as the History Channel's first ever dramatic series "Vikings" is as close as you'll get to Brian Wood's phenomenal ongoing saga. The steel is cold as is the setting, but this series shows us 8th century Scandinavian life wasn't glamorous or easy.

Just finished Book One of the Northlanders series and noticed that the OPL has Book Three and Four - but what happened to Book Two?

I picked this up because, hey, Vikings, should be cool. In fact, it's a dull mash-up of boring violence, rambling pointless cynical-speak and bed-hopping. You can't even tell they're Vikings because the main character talks like a cranky arts student and nobody else seems to think or act much like a Viking, or even much like any person of the time. The writer tries to make it all tough-guy and bad@s$ with gratuitous f-bombs and sex scenes, but it fails to impress. The setting doesn't come through at all--nobody seems to think or act much like a Viking, they're just playing dress-up.
Art: 3/5 (nice chapter title-pages, everything else is kinda blah)
Story:1/5 (very thin and uninteresting)
Enjoyment: hey, I couldn't even finish it and it's just a skinny little volume.
