Opinion

From Library Staff

Tiffany Aching is a witch in training, but she needs the help of the Wee Free Men -- tiny, blue-skinned, and VERY EXCITABLE -- to help rescue her unfortunate baby brother. Also available to download.

Armed with only a frying pan, Tiffany sets off to rescue her little brother from a magic queen. Full of sly humor, puns and the manic nonsense of a band of fierce six inch tall men, who talk with a Scottish brogue, and are famous for "stealin' an' drinkin' an' fightin'!"

Another thoroughly enjoyable Terry Pratchett novel - this one introduces the "Wee Free Men" ("Pictsies") who provide a continual backdrop to all the books in Pratchett's Tiffany Aching series. Despite the title however, this book is more about Tiffany Aching's beginnings as a witch, with the help of this group of rowdy, hard drinking, simple honest thieves and brawlers.

This is classified as a young adult novel, but I believe it would appeal to all ages, from around 8 on up through adult.

No sooner does Tiffany Aching discover she's a witch than she must set out to rescue her little brother from an evil magic queen. Good thing she has the Nac Mac Feegle (Wee Free Men) on her side.
