This movie is a modern day classic. The storyline, the acting, all are top notch. It was also filmed in Ohio. Mansfield, to be exact. A must see.

Terrific story and acting, possibly my favourite Stephen King story and movie.

Love this movie. The cast is great especially the main two; Morgan Freeman (love him) and Tim Robbins. The plot is good. The choice of the decade was also a good idea so you could see the transition of America. I've seen it a few times and the more I watch it the more I like it.

Arguably, one of the very best movies ever made. An amazing performance from both Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. This is one movie that never gets boring regardless how many times you watch it. "Get busy living or get busy dying"... Highly recommend.

For me this is the best movie.

This is a movie with universal appeal. Nearly everyone will take something positive away depending on their personal perspective. For a Catholic perspective, the following commentary by Fr. Robert Barron, I find particularly interesting.

All the people who adore this film should see 1979's "Escape From Alcatraz" (noting that it's based on a true story) & see how many similarities there are to "Shawshank", which is based on a book that King wrote a few years after "Alcatraz" had been released.

Exceptional movie definitely worth watching. Morgan Freeman's performance is absolutely incredible.

This movie was created in a way that made it real, made it seem like it could have happened and therefore made it all the more terrifying, heartwrenching and intruiging. A movie that leaves you with a bittersweet smile and hopeful smile.
A very good very sad movie.

This dramatic endearing movie will appeal to a wide audience.

The tale of a man wrongly accused and imprisoned this movie follows the path of a man seeking his redemption.

While his struggles to find a place in Shawshank prison, and his efforts to escape are clever and engrossing, it is friendship that is at the heart of this story.

Highly recommended.

Coarse Language: Loads, I mean, loads of vulgar and foul language. But then, it's a film with prison inmates...what would you expect?

Frightening or Intense Scenes: These scenes are riddled throughout the movie so they are not isolated to simply one section. Be warned.

Violence: mild but intense

Andy Dufresne: What about you? What are you in here for?
Red: Murder, same as you.
Andy Dufresne: Innocent?

Red: [narrating] The first night's the toughest, no doubt about it. They march you in naked as the day you were born, skin burning and half blind from that delousing shit they throw on you, and when they put you in that cell... and those bars slam home... that's when you know it's for real. A whole life blown away in the blink of an eye. Nothing left but all the time in the world to think about it.

Red: [narrating] I wish I could tell you that Andy fought the good fight, and the Sisters let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but prison is no fairy-tale world. He never said who did it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile - prison life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Andy would show up with fresh bruises. The Sisters kept at him - sometimes he was able to fight 'em off, sometimes not. And that's how it went for Andy - that was his routine. I do believe those first two years were the worst for him, and I also believe that if things had gone on that way, this place would have got the best of him.
