I bought this book for my 6 year old daughter before we traveled to China this summer. She started to read it at JFK airport and finished it before going to bed the first night in Beijing. She read it again and again in the next 2 weeks. The book is a novel consisted of a series of stories, many of them based on Chinese folklore.

My 6 and 8 year old boys have loved listening to this story. Full of classic Chinese tales woven within the larger story, the author employs brilliant metaphors and the whole book is beautifully written.

"Young Minli and her parents live near China's Fruitless Mountain, and though they all work very hard, they're terribly poor. Enchanted by the folktales that her father tells every night and weary of her mother's bitter complaining, Minli - aided by a talking goldfish, a dragon who cannot fly, and others - embarks on a long journey to find the mythical Old Man of the Moon and change her family's fortune. While Minli's grand and exciting adventure is distinctively Chinese, it will thrill fans of other quests with girl heroes." My 10 y/o son enjoyed having his 5th grade teacher read this to the class. He said he never got distracted and it was very engaging. He is not a big reader.

This is a beautifully organized, written, and themed read. Huge fan of the story within the story and all the interconnectedness that ultimate carries the plot. Lin is a gifted craftswoman to build these tales that have powerful life lessons about appreciation.

I LOVED this book!! Grace Lin has a beautifully unusual way of putting lessons into stories. I'd reccommend this book for everyone.

I loved this book, although I usually read thicker and harder novels, this one was throughly enjoyable no matter what age, reading level, or genre prefferance you are. My top favourite.
