This is hands-down one of THE best audio books we've ever listened to and that includes all the Jim Dale narrated Harry Potter books. Bahni Turpin is just amazing and absolutely pitch perfect for every character in this hilarious book. It's soon to be a new movie, "Home", and I'm sure my kids will want to go see it, but it will pale in comparison to this audio book. We all loved the narrator so much we went and looked for other audio books she narrated, regardless of genre or style. This is a very funny story and my kids have enjoyed reading it too, but I know they have Bahni Turpin's voice in their heads when they read. Just excellent all around!

This is essentially a full-cast audiobook, read by one, incredibly talented voice actor. So very highly recommended!!!

I did not want to like this sci-fi children's novel. I thought the dialogue was pretentious and long-winded, but once J.Lo and Gratuity seriously got to the business of finding her mother, 7/9 of the way through the book, I became intrigued. I appreciated Rex's attention to diversity and overall liked the themes of acceptance and self-confidence. Really clever young readers will get a kick out of the slam the author makes toward the notion of celebrity.

Our family listens to a lot of audiobooks, many of them excellent (the whole Harry Potter series narrated by Jim Dale, lots of Full Cast Audio productions, etc.). This is simply the best one we've ever had the pleasure to enjoy. The book is wildly original in the way it Cuisinarts familiar genres - alien invasion blends with buddy road trip. Lots of food for discussion in its themes. Plus it's funny as hell (excuse my language, as Gratuity would say). Then the narrator is brilliant, evoking not only a range of American voices but those of two different alien races as well. We've all started quoting J.Lo, the Boov ("We'll be sneaky agents, like Bond James Bond.") I'm sure Smekday is a great read, but if you have a chance to hear the audiobook, do not miss it.

I agree with this quote from Gin Phillips, author of "Come In & Cover Me" & "The Well & The Mine":

"One way I judge the impact of a book is how its various bits and pieces wangle their way into my daily life. Do certain phrases stick in my head? Am I unable to resist reading it aloud to my husband? Days and weeks after I finish it, am I quoting from it — to my family, to my dog, to an empty kitchen? I read Adam Rex's young adult novel, The True Meaning of Smekday in 2007, and I was immediately hooked on its weird, brilliant vision of an Earth invaded — and later abandoned — by a hostile alien race called the Boov. My whole family liked it so much that reading it out loud soon replaced the Nintendos that usually dominate our car trips." {NPR, February 27, 2012}
