Sixteen-year-old Col Porpentine is being groomed as the next Commander of Worldshaker, a juggernaut where elite families live on the upper decks while the Filthies toil below, but when he meets Riff, a Filthy girl on the run, he discovers how ignorant he is of his home and its residents.

Add a CommentAn intriguing stoy that held my attention very well. Good book all around.
An excellent YA steampunk alternate history that deals with the social class system of this parallel society. While we're not explicitly told what a juggernaut actually is, the Worldshaker seems to be a city sized moving tank. The elite live in luxury on the topmost decks, while the "filthies" toil at the bottom. Very similar to Metropolis. And like Metropolis, one of the elite (the heir-apparant) starts to question the status quo after he meets and falls in love with a "Filthy" named Riff. A lot of good themes, some likeable characters and a couple of nasty villians make this a very enjoyable read.
I couldn't resit it:) i hope there is a sequel.
Col is an Upper Decks grandson of the Supreme Commander and was then named as his successor. As Col’s grandfather gives him a tour of the juggernaut, Worldshaker, he sees the Filthies, a very lower class who live and work at the bottom of the deck, and are “dangerous and necessary” (p.8). But soon he meets Riff, a Filthy who isn’t as filthy as she is. He starts to question the teachings of the Filthies. They are just the same as Col but not animals as he was told. As he helps Riff, he is caught in a series of events that question his loyalty. But he must choose whether to help the Filthies or to go back to his life as an Upper Decker and successes as the next Supreme Commander. However Col is two years older than Riff, sometimes I feel that Riff is far older than fourteen. And yet Col is very naïve and sympathetic, and can be very childlike! But he becomes more mature as the story unfolds. Overall, the characters are very well written. Worldshaker is an amazing steam punk read and is very enjoyable. Harland makes all readers dying for more.
I couldn't put it down (:
