Item Details

Workaholic attorney Samantha Sweeting has just done the unthinkable. She's made a mistake so huge, it'll wreck any chance of a partnership. Going into utter meltdown, she walks out of her London office, gets on a train, and ends up in the middle of nowhere. Asking for directions at a big, beautiful house, she's mistaken for an interviewee and finds herself being offered a job as housekeeper. Her employers have no idea they've hired a lawyer--and Samantha has no idea how to work the oven. She can't sew on a button, bake a potato, or get the ironing board to open. How she takes a deep breath and begins to cope--and finds love--is a story as delicious as the bread she learns to bake.

The undomestic Goddess is another one of Sophie Kinsella’s light hearted reads. This was a quick book to read during the summer. It revolves around Samantha, a workaholic who is striving to be the best lawyer she can possibly be. She has absolutely no time for anything except for work, she manages everything in 6 minute intervals, and always has her trusty black berry by her side, usually buzzing of emails. Things are looking good for Samantha until she makes the biggest mistake and there is no chance of any partnership for her. Depressed and alone, she gets on her train and ends up in a place she doesn’t know anything about. When she decides to ask for help, she is mistaken for a housekeeper wanting an interview and lands a job! The only problem is she has no idea what she’s doing. Samantha doesn’t know how to make 5 star meals or fold clothes or iron. This book is filled with hilarious accidents as Samantha tries to learn how to become a housekeeper and keep her big secret. As a huge fan of Sophie Kinsella books, I have to say this wasn’t my favorites. It was very unrealistic, her other books like Can you keep a secret and The shopaholic series are just more believable. The odds of Samantha’s situation are slim to none, so I didn’t cheer as much for her happy ending. Nevertheless, it was a good chic lit, a cute romance and some funny encounters. I recommend this to anyone looking for a cute, simple read.

I found the first half of the book a little slow but then the story and humor picked up quite a bit. "Can You Keep a Secret?" was much better. Still worth the read though.

It was a really quick read, just like all of Kinsella's books. I liked the main character and how she grows. The setting in the countryside is very relaxing and made me feel like going outside and gardening. I recommend this one if you like Kinsella's books. It's definitely one of her best.

Interesting read, as always, the heroine is stuck in a messy situation and must figure out the easiest way to fix her life.

An enjoyable read, very funny! A successful young woman discovers her time is not her own and decides to change her life around, with comic results. My only fault with the book is that Samantha comes off as somewhat a disappointment to women's rights advocates. I felt she could have been truer to herself if she had only been more assertive with her employers. Work-life balance can be achieved, but you have to speak up for yourself. Still, the book is fun and entertaining... a wonderful example of a story where good food sets the mood!
