Add a CommentJulia and Eliza are best friends who spend a summer living and playing together in and around a woodland hotel where Eliza’s dad works. Julia’a mom is serving overseas with the National Guard and there is an undercurrent of worry throughout the story as Julia daydreams about her mom’s safety. Baskin has written a gentle story of two girls on the edge of adolescence. They are secure in their own friendship but are ready to test the waters with a new boy in the area. Julia sets her sights on achieving her first kiss while Elisa feels somewhat left behind in their familiar world of make believe and summer activities. There is a suspenseful event and, as mentioned, the thread of military danger in the novel.
