In the future, after a Third World War has decimated much of the Earth's population, a new nation arose. Believing human emotions and their expression were to blame for the failings of past societies, it is decreed that all citizens must take a daily dose of a drug which levels out the emotional landscape, and that all forms of creative expression are against the law. An elite law enforcement officer who tracks down and punishes "sense offenders" one day, accidentally, fails to take his drug, and for the first time begins experiencing emotions himself.

If you enjoy action and politics, here’s another fast-moving movie with a message and an A-list cast.
“‘Equilibrium’ would be a mindless action picture, except that it has a mind. It doesn't do a lot of deep thinking, but unlike many futuristic combos of sf and f/x, it does make a statement: Fr... Read More »

This was a really dumb, boring and stupid movie. Waste of time - Waste of Electrical power.

The disease is "human emotion"._____ Equilibrium's story is set in the futuristic, post-apocalyptic State of Libra._____ With "Father" as the supreme dictator and the Tetragrammaton Police as the hired-muscle: All members of Libra's automaton society are forced to take Prozium, a highly-effective emotion suppressor._____ Cleric, John Preston is a top-ranking government agent whose responsibility it is to destroy those who oppose "Father's" laws, which includes the refusal to take one's daily dosage of Prozium._____ The first half hour of Equilibrium was actually quite exhilarating with its stunning visual effects, knock-out gun fighting and its martial arts combat that was nothing short of stupendous._____ But, then Cleric, John Preston had to go and "secretly" stop taking his Prozium and that's when this film sank right down to the level of a totally sucky, cry-baby, futuristic melodrama._____ In the long run, Equilibrium's story was less-than-original, being pretty much just a lop-sided mishmash of such movies as - Gattaca, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, THX 1138 and The Matrix.

This movie is pretty silly and boring. I fell asleep about two-thirds of the way in. The only thing about this movie that caused me to have a "sense offense" was the renewed realization that Christian Bale really does have a breathtakingly beautiful mug. His face is a masterpiece. Aside from the pulchritudinous perfection of Christian Bale, there was nothing memorable or remarkable about this movie.

Loved it, especially the action scenes-- Gun Kata is so cool!
Anyway, the storyline/ plot could've used some work, but I think overall this is one of my favorite action films.

Great dystopian sci fi film. the action is great and Bale is superb. Sort of Farenheit 451ish with an edge. The story pulls you in mostly because of the great acting of Bale going from a completely unfeeling killing machine to an emotional wreck (still a killing machine...)

If you think the story line is poor then you just haven't lived enough to relate to the story. If you ever have been injured and gone on opaite pain killers and come off then you will understand the drug they are feeding the population in this movie to dull there senses. You will also nderstand how life is much brighter when you are free of such drugs which happens to the main character happenings in this movie. It is the ultimate of sci- fi and not everyone can understand the beauty after having to be on opiates. In the movie they call there equilibrium drug the opiad of life, and the strugle is just getting free of it all 5 star movie all the way with the awesome action.
