Found this Jem by accident (browsing the shelves @ Mid-Manhattan Branch). At the time this movie was made, it was ahead of it's time. A good story and great acting (Bruce Dern), make this a movie that has stood the test of time. I enjoyed this film!

his movie is way too dated to watch. The music in some of the scenes is so bad that you have to fast forward it. Don’t bother with this one.

This 1971 movie is as relevant today as it was back then.
Check out the "Extra" section on this DVD. It was filmed on a soon to be decommissioned aircraft carrier.
This movie is great considering the budget they were committed to.
I have added it to my "Buy List."

This under-rated 1970s sci-fi 'dystopian' movie holds up very well. Of course the special effects are primitive by todays standards, and of course the pacing of the movie is slower (as comments below also explain) as were all space films of the time (you want slow? Try '2001: A Space Odyssey'). As a character piece, and as social/environmental commentary, it outclasses the original 'Planet of the Apes,' and is nowhere near as schlocky as 'Logan's Run' and 'Soylent Green,' from the same era.

This was a good sci fi movie. Sad, depressing and brutally slow pacing would probably hurt its appeal to a broad audience, but I liked it. The main character does a great acting job. The movie does plod along, but it acheives the desired effect of plunging the viewer into a world of loneliness and depression.

Beautiful film, and terrific songs by Joan Baez, but darn, it can be pretty depressing at times!
