A magical listen, beautifully read by Jim Dale of Harry Potter fame. This story takes you into a fantasy world that you will wish is real

Magical tale that must be listened to. Jim Dale does a marvelous job bringing life and personality to each and every unique character. This is a rich story with description that puts you right in the field waiting for the circus to appear.

If you like magical settings, this is a great read. I loved how this book whisked me away into a world of enchantment set against an otherwise ordinary historical backdrop. The setting takes the cake, but the beautiful and somewhat tragic love story gives it deeper meaning. Jim Dale’s dreamlike voice is an added bonus.

Jim Dale is a great narrator, but I just wasn't feeling The Night Circus. It's a little too atmospheric and "oooooooh, magic!" and not enough story or meaningful character development for me. It's also in present tense, which I think makes it harder to listen to for some reason. Jumped ship halfway through.

Jim Dale (the reader) was fabulous as always but I thought the story was a little dragy and anticlimactic.

I do wonder at times, if I would feel differently about a book if I read it instead of listened or vice versa. Well I listened to this one and the reader's voice did add something to my experience. It was a totally delightful experience and I didn't have any comparisons with similiar stories. I just enjoyed this one.

While I was entertained visiting Erin Morgenstern's world in The Night Circus, the story never quite wrestled my imagination. It felt like the plot and tone were shadows of other popular books. (I was too often reminded of Harry Potter, Twilight and Water for Elephants.) Every now and then launching a new idea on the heels of other successes can work (here I'm thinking of the TV show Lost, which was developed from the then-recent popularity of Survivor and Cast Away), but more frequently it falls flat and is forgotten.

Morgenstern is an excellent writer and her debut novel hardly falls flat, but I do fear it will be forgotten. I look forward to her next work and I hope she's earned the freedom to pen something more risky and original.
