Kris is "growing up"...her experiences are catching up to her, and she's realizing their impact. She's also living changes, and feeling how her promotion impacts her life. It's a story about life, war, cold war; it's also about how family isn't always blood, how enemies can give a hand, and how differences, especially cultural, can be the hardest thing to overcome. Great military sci-fi.
