Cheryh deftly balances alien psychology and human vanities in a character caught between being human and part of an alien race

Thought I'd check out Cherryh's work but this isn't the book for that... many volumes' worth of back story out there. I'll have to find the 1st book in one of her series and see if it interests me.

It's always a good feeling when a new Foreigner book comes out and I get to immerse myself in this world and its characters once more. That said, a bit too much talk and not enough action in this one, although from the point of view of the main character, leading a diplomat's life of committees, reports and formal functions probably makes a refreshing break from being shot at. Plenty of tension about the activities of the Assassins' Guild, but mostly offstage. The adventures of young Cajeiri, restless and bored with the restrictions of being a politician's son, stole the show in this one.

One’s heart beat a little faster. Definitely. Even after a trip on a starship, these landings at the mercy of a planet’s unforgiving mass, involving so much support, involving weather, involving very high-velocity machinery, never became entirely routine.
