Item Details

"In this new book, we hear directly from the artist through the widest array of sources--letters, notes to himself, published articles, rough drafts, stories, and poetry--creating the most detailed picture available of Seeger as a musician, an activist, and a family man, in his own words and from his own perspective... The portrait that emerges is not a saint, not a martyr, but a flesh-and-blood man, struggling to understand his gift, his time, and his place."--from book jacket.

I’m a folk music fan from back in the 1950s and on. I read “Sing Out’ magazine and attended and participated in hootenannies and other gatherings of folk singers. I was an activist in some of the same causes for which Pete Seeger sang, played banjo and wrote. When I saw this book in the New Titles section of my library website, I happily put it on reserve. This is a collection of articles Pete wrote about his life, sometimes at the time the events were taking place, sometimes in retrospection. Letters he received and carbon copies of letters he wrote over the years are also included in this book. It is a wonderful journey through Pete Seeger’s life and the times he lived in. I appreciate getting behind-the-scenes insight into many of the activities going on. And I respect Pete Seeger’s willingness to put it out there, to share with us the readers. Thank you for this amazing memoir.
