With much sensuous detail--smells, as well as sights and sounds--Miss. Keane paints a vivid picture of the world of English living in Ireland in the early part of the 20th century. The Good Behaviour of the title is the all-important politeness and code of conduct that effectively suppressed any display of heart-felt feelings. Her naïve first-person narrator reveals to the reader more than she herself understands. A tragic story (laced with black humor) and a satisfying resolution.
