It is an awesome movie...totally understand why it was Academy Award nominated...showcasing humanism, drama and how people pull together in time of utter of destruction (tsunami)

Great movie. Unbelievable that anyone survived this catastrophe

A decent movie in terms of bringing the tsunami and particularly the confusion afterwards as people swept away attempted to find one another. Some good tear-jerking moments, but as another reviewer noted, [SPOILER ALERT] I think the ending (the reunited family leaving on a large private plane) was a mistake; the ending could easily have been after they were reunited in the hospital or maybe even in showing them safely at home reflecting back on events or something. I think the movie also focused a little too much on not only this wealthy white family, but the white tourists, and not so much the locals. Obviously this event had a huge and devastating impact on the local population, and it would have been better, in my opinion, to at least give that aspect more screen time.

A powerful movie and a good depiction of what the family went through.

One of those movies that is hard to watch....Emotionally moving. Brings you down to reality about what is most important in life. We don't have forever to enjoy being with our loved ones. Great movie.

Fantastic movie. The special effects were excellent. Really made me realize what the victims went through during the horrific tsunami. A little hokey at one point but that was hollywood's take on it. Still a great movie to see.

This movie was very tough to watch. Watching it was an insanely emotional experience. I cried throughout the whole thing. Newcomer Tom Holland was truly amazing. He succeeded in achieving a truly powerful performance. Naomi Watts was up for an Academy Award for this, I don't understand why he wasn't as well. Not to say that Watts wasn't amazing as well, she was. She really got to me when she was on the plane, after her and Lucas had their moment. Ewan McGregor was fantastic too. I definitely would not recommend this movie to everyone. Its tough, at times gross (I will admit to fast forwarding through the scene where Watts is vommitting everywhere) and very emotional. Knowing that its based on a true story just makes it that much harder. But, that being said, this movie is very, very great. If you think you can handle it, I old definitely try watching it.

I gave this film two stars because I found the special effects really amazing. I can't begin to imagine what the experience was really like and I get that this is one family's experience, but I have to agree with others who point that this is all a very priviledged and "white" experience. The most shocking and horrific moment for me came at the very end when we watch a plane that can hold probably 100 people leave with a family of five and the flight crew. After the film has spent the previous 90 minutes showing us how compassionate this family is and how they help everyone else around them in big and small ways, this scene just made the whole experience really hollow. Finally, while I typically love Naomi Watts I didn't feel this performance was Oscar-worthy at all, since she lies on a hospital bed moaning throught most of it.

Distressing, often tough to watch. A personal story within a larger tragedy. Naomi Watts is heartbreaking. Worthwhile.
