Cheerful Weather for the Wedding
"Today is Dolly Thatchum's wedding day, and her family is arriving with all the cheerfulness, chaos and grievances that accompany such gatherings. Trouble appears in the shape of Joseph, Dolly's former lover from the previous summer, who throws her feelings into turmoil. But Dolly's mother will not allow her carefully laid plans for her daughter's future to be threatened. As the clock ticks and the guests grow more and more restless, the bride-to-be must decide whether to run away with Joseph or settle into the humdrum security of married life."--Container.

The story is not new, but the way it is treated is, and the movie is very. very well done and mastered.

This a very British film, in the best way possible. The set design and costumes are beautiful. All the actors are first rate - Luke Treadaway and Olly Alexander in particular. If you enjoy quiet, period, English countryside-set films, this one is for you.

I just put a hold on this movie because I enjoy Elizabeth McGovern'a work. I have followed her career for years, ever since, "Once Upon a Time in America".

I am also intrigued by the contradictory comments posted. I wonder what I will think of this movie!

I watch lots of period drama/art house films but I found this hard to follow. The characters were repellent rather than charmingly quirky, so I had difficulty developing any interest in any of their fates. I turned this off mid-way through and gave it back to the library. Not enjoyable.

A sunday afternoon movie in the lines of Downton Abbey. A period piece about the decisions of marriage and will she/won't she go through with the wedding. Nicely intersperced with flashbacks to the early days of courtship and relationships with other suitors.

Here is a low budget film that looks like a MAJOR production. I love the way the director allowed the actors to improvise and be guests at the house.
We didn't even see the church. That didn't even matter for the antics of the guests and family were so riveting.
That's the secret ... I felt as if I was one of the guests; that I was there.

Saw it a couple of months ago, and, to tell you the truth, I can't recall if they did or didn't. (I suspect they didn't: I have a vague feeling of disappointment.) This may be a measure of how hard it was to care. There were some witty bits.

I don't always enjoy period dramas, there can be something rather try hard about them, but this film was very enjoyable, beautifully filmed with good characterization and good casting. The story could have been mundane and unoriginal but instead swept me along with its intensity and will they-won't they guesswork. Good entertainment on a very small budget.
