From Library Staff

We get to go inside the mind of Doctor Impossible, genius inventor and megalomaniacal would-be world conqueror. The author's challenge was keeping him sympathetic. Did he succeed? Yes. Dr. Impossible just wants to be loved and respected. Failing that, 'feared' will do.

The super villain's side of the story. One for fans of 'Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog.'

For those of us who grew up reading comic books, enjoying sci-fi and other geek pursuits, it's been bittersweet to formerly lonely adolescent boy pursuits become mainstream. Austin Grossman's debut novel is about super heroes and super villains, particularly evil genius Dr. Impossible. Initially, I thought this book would be obnoxious and pleased with itself, like "Ready Player One" and "How To Live Safely in a SF Universe." But it's quite clever and enjoyable, recalling "The Incredibles" (but more grown up) and "Watchmen" (but funnier).

bham2013 This fantastic tale is told in alternating chapters from the perspective of Dr. Impossible, evil super-genius, and Fatale, aspiring superhero. Filled with complex characters and hilarious situations, this is the literary equivalent of the avengers movie - ridiculously over the top but too fun to put down. I'm not a comic book reader but I thoroughly enjoyed the intelligent writing and gleeful energy of this dissertation-procrastination.

I loved the premise of this story and especially loved the chapters from the point of view of the supervillian, Doctor Impossible. It lost itself in some of it's own details, especially when talking about the different superheroes/villians in the history of this world, but there is a glossary to help you out. There were a couple of things that were started but then sort of fizzled out, which is why I only gave this one a three out of five stars. But, in the end, I enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Alternating first-person narrative of the world's smartest super-criminal and one of it's latest super-heroes, which leads up to their cataclysmic battle. Slightly ironic throughout, this is ultimately a straight adventure tale which not only covers the criminal's latest plot to take over the world but also 70 years of history of earth's mightiest heroes. Recommended even to those who don't like comics and want a light read.

A comic book without the pictures, superheroes and evil villains and all. Austin Grossman has hit on the love of all things superhero for a generation that isn't "supposed" to read comics anymore - and so he's developed an emotional and complex story following superheroes through their regular shenanigans, but also giving us a glimpse behind the masks. Laugh out loud funny, I hope Mr. Grossman brings us more like this in the future.
