Opinion

From Library Staff

If you like apocalyptic Weird Westerns, this one is for you. Hickman sprawls a futuristic story about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse amid sparse technological artwork. Highly original and open-ended.

An alternate America with a perpetual western frontier. A cryptic prophecy of the apocolypse. Three horsemen walk the earth in search of the fourth. The intent here is obviously a slow burner of a story and I can get behind it, my only hesitation is feeling burnt out on apocalyptic fiction. The artwork is highly stylized ,especially when it comes to the use of color, but at the same time remains detailed and precise as it has to be. In other words, unique and pretty. Recommended for the art alone and hopefully for the story as it progresses.

Sci-Fi dystopia meets religion meets a Western. East of West shows us a vastly differently world in which there are three horsemen of the apocalypse - Death is on his own very personal mission of revenge. All of the hallmarks of a good Western are here with just enough of a twist to keep you interested. It took a little to sort out the mythology and exactly what the heck happened in this alternate USA but I expect there will be more of that to come in other volumes. If you love Westerns with a twist and haven't tired of any apocalyptic/dystopian tales, this is worth a look.

The Apocalypse has come! Three of the four Horseman begin decimating mankind, yet the fourth has left them, and they have every reason to be afraid. Death leaves his own trail of corpses, however his purpose is not to bring about the end of the world, but to get revenge. Revenge against those who took his wife, the only woman to conquer death. While Death hunts the Chosen of the Horsemen down, the Horsemen hunt him. In this alternate history, religion and sci-fi come together within the setting of a western. It bares all the usual traits that make a western appealing, including: grit, gunfights, natives, drama, and a tough-guy hero. There are differences though, such as a female lead who is iron-willed, and unforgiving. It is from her union with Death, that East and West meet. The art switches between the gritty violence, and the more flashy display of colours that the rest uses. Amidst all these hues and the blood are Death and his partners. All three stand out in their clean whiteness that represents the finality of life. The author reveals information only at the exact moment it is needed, so its takes a while before we gleam what the story is exactly. At its core, it is a western revenge story that would not normally stand out. However, its near-perfect execution, as well as the additional non-western elements, set it into a class of its own. The first volume establishes the groundwork for an incredible tale of one person's will to save his loved ones, even while the world is ending.
