In Woody Allen’s homage to A Streetcar Named Desire, Jasmine’s marriage to Hal, her wealthy husband, has fallen apart. His downfall, ala Bernie Madoff, forces her out of her socialite bubble into an almost penniless existence. She takes refuge in her sister’s funky San Francisco apartment to stru... Read More »

This film suffered a bit from Allen's propensity towards character-driven vs. plot-driven story arcs. If Blanchett wasn't the lead I'm not sure it would have carried nearly as well, but she was absolutely spectacular. There was a scene where she was drunk where I was simply amazed not just at her ability to act, but her ability to control even her facial muscles in a way that made her state completely believable.

Cate Blanchett won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her incredible performance as Jasmine, sometimes a fancy upper class wealthy woman and at other times a near manic and alcoholic mess. Alec Baldwin plays a scheming, scamming, philandering slime ball. Some critics suggest that Woody Allen got his ideas from A Streetcar Named Desire while others think he is trying to portray Mia Farrow when their relationship was breaking up. This film portrays a whole group of people messed up by others or by themselves and not all of them will live happily ever after.

Woody Allen clearly knows how to start some turned up Drama as a writer and director, but in the case of his movie right here he doesn't know how to end it period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have given this movie 4 stars but settled for 3 because of so many similarities to A Streetcar Name Desire.
If it was meant to be similar then it gets 4 stars.
Some of the similarities were the mentally fragile and financially spent Jasmine, the rough and loud boyfriend, Chili,so much like Stanley in Streetcar and the forgiving and always helpful sister Ginger, Blue Jasmine was an interesting movie. There were a few scenes that were a waste of time, but it was entertaining and and well written.

Cate Blanchett was a joy to watch as the famous San Francisco landmarks. The subject matters on Wall Street shenanigans and psychiatric disorder were serious yet the rest of the film on men-women relationships were all fluff to induce a few good laughs. The very difficult ending felt unfinished, that Woody Allen decided not to face the tragedy ahead.

Ending song "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" lyrics:
A good man is hard to find,
You always get the other kind
Just when you think that he's your pal,
You look for him and find
Him fooling around some other gal
Then you rave,
You even pray,
To see him laying in his grave
So if your man is nice,
You better take my advice
Hug him in the morning,
Kiss him every night,
Give him plenty loving,
Treat him right
Cause a good man now day's is hard to find

So if your man is nice,
You better take my advice
And hug him in the morning,
Kiss him every night,
Give him plenty loving,
And treat him right
For a good man now day's is hard to find

Jasmine: Believe me when I tell you. They tried six medications on me. Cocktails, they call them. The only cocktail that helped was a Stoli martini.
