Opinion

From Library Staff

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

I know other people who loved the snarky voice of this character accidentally stranded on Mars, but it didn't resonate for me. I wanted either more depth to the character or a better sense of how he's using humor as a defense mechanism. The middle road of narration that was taken instead is, in my opinion, not terrible, but fairly bland.

The was a good fast paced novel. Not exactly sci-fi but completely enthralling. Like others I stayed up way too late reading because I couldn't stop reading.

An excellent book that at numerous times I stayed up WAY too late reading. I loved the way that you couldn't predict where it was going. I also loved the explanation of science and chemistry in it - although it requires a little suspension of your disbelief to enjoy.

It's not literary fiction but it is plenty fun.

If you like hard sci-fi, this will satisfy immensely. It also made me aspire to learn some more skills!

This is one of the best books we've read in a very long time. Its both funny and suspenseful. I could go again almost straight away.

Very good, almost excellent. The cover caught my eye and once I stated reading and got all the characters straight in my head, I couldn't put it down.

Really enjoyed reading this. Never knew anything about space travel, terminology, et al, until I read this book. The protagonist is a blast & a delight with an incredible sense of humour as well as having a strong sense of self-preservation to go along with that incredible high intellect. It made me love him! :)

What an excellent read! This was my first sci-fi but guess what? I LOVED IT. From the beginning 'til the very last page! I didn't even know I was going to like this book so much considering that this is about astronauts in space, blahblahblah...I thought it'd be too scientific and technical for me to get through the book. It indeed was quite technical and had quite a lot of science but didn't expect the humor in this book that would make me WANT to know what'd happen to this poor guy stranded in Mars while he uses his engineering and science to survive. Very enjoyable! In fact, I'm even getting my own copy.

"Hell yeah I'm a botanist1 Fear my botany powers!"

"Remember those old math questions you had in algebra class? Where water is entering a container at a certain rate and leaving it at a different rate and you need to find out when it will be empty? Well, that concept is critical to the 'Mark Watney doesn't' project I'm working on."

"Yes, of course duct tape works in a near-vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshiped."
