Multcolib My Librarian Diana: World War II Fiction
Annotation:Two wonderful characters, one who becomes a German soldier, and one a blind girl who winds up working for the French resistance, grow up under the shadow of WWII until their paths converge. This is wonderful, moving and beautifully written.
Annotation:Two young women become good and true friends as well as a magnificent team. One is a spy and the other is a pilot. When they fly into occupied France, the mission doesn't go as intended.
Annotation:In September 1943, Claudette Blum and her father flee across the Alps into Italy with other Jews seeking refuge, only to find an open battle ground among the Nazis, Allied forces, resistance fighters, and ordinary Italians struggling to survive. There are a lot of characters, and they all come to life in the pages of this exceptional novel.
Annotation:The people in small German town find their lives-- and their characters-- changed by their experience as the Third Reich comes to power and touches them in innumerable ways. At the center of the book is Trudi, a dwarf, historian, librarian, and observer of everyone's secrets. This is a pretty wonderful book.
Annotation:At the end of WWII, you really didn't want to get stuck in the part of Germany that was going to be occupied by The Soviet Union, so thousands of people moved westward, trying to get on the American side of the line. This novel tells of some of those people and their desperate journeys and really captures the chaos war ultimately brings about.
Annotation:Trying to make sense of the horrors of World War II, Death relates the story of Liesel--a young German girl whose book-stealing and story-telling talents help sustain her family and the Jewish man they are hiding, as well as their neighbors.
Annotation:Charlotte's mission is to help the French Resistance by delivering supplies to keep the wireless radios working, but she also really wants to find the missing RAF pilot with whom she had an intense affair before he disappeared. Officially, this fine novel is the third in a trilogy, but the three books aren't really connected except that all three are about love and war. Each book can absolutely stand alone.
Annotation:This novel beautifully evokes a sensual Greek island- and then shows what happens to it as World War II intensifies. There's also a truly lovely romance-- and just a little bit of magic. This is a great book.
Annotation:This has to be the gentlest and most charming book ever written about WWII. It takes place on one of those islands in the Channel off the coast of Britain, an island that was occupied by the Germans. It’s my go-to book to recommend to patrons who want something sex-and-violence-free for their aged parents-- but it’s really good, with wonderful characters and a nice romance. I knew very little about those islands, and nothing about what happened there during the war, so I learned a lot in this book.

All of these beautifully written novels are set during World War II in Europe. We're glad we didn't have to live through it, but we visit it often in fiction.
