At the center of the book is Trudi, a dwarf, historian, librarian, and observer of everyone's secrets. This is a pretty wonderful book.

Skeletons at the Feast
Skeletons at the Feast A Novel By Bohjalian, Chris (Book - 2008 ) FICTION BOHJALIAN Available in some locations

Annotation:At the end of WWII, you really didn't want to get stuck in the part of Germany that was going to be occupied by The Soviet Union, so thousands of people moved westward, trying to get on the American side of the line. This novel tells of some of those people and their desperate journeys and really captures the chaos war ultimately brings about.

The Book Thief

Charlotte Gray
Charlotte Gray A Novel By Faulks, Sebastian (Book - 2000 ) FICTION FAULKS 2000 Available in some locations

Annotation:Charlotte's mission is to help the French Resistance by delivering supplies to keep the wireless radios working, but she also really wants to find the missing RAF pilot with whom she had an intense affair before he disappeared. Officially, this fine novel is the third in a trilogy, but the three books aren't really connected except that all three are about love and war. Each book can absolutely stand alone.

Corelli's Mandolin
Corelli's Mandolin By De Bernières, Louis (Book - 1994 ) FICTION DEBERNIER All copies in use. Availability details

Annotation:This novel beautifully evokes a sensual Greek island- and then shows what happens to it as World War II intensifies. There's also a truly lovely romance-- and just a little bit of magic. This is a great book.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society By Shaffer, Mary Ann (Book - 2008 ) FICTION SHAFFER 2008 Available in some locations

Annotation:This has to be the gentlest and most charming book ever written about WWII. It takes place on one of those islands in the Channel off the coast of Britain, an island that was occupied by the Germans. It’s my go-to book to recommend to patrons who want something sex-and-violence-free for their aged parents-- but it’s really good, with wonderful characters and a nice romance. I knew very little about those islands, and nothing about what happened there during the war, so I learned a lot in this book.

All of these beautifully written novels are set during World War II in Europe. We're glad we didn't have to live through it, but we visit it often in fiction.
