My Librarian Favorites June 2014

We the Animals
We the Animals By Torres, Justin (Book - 2011 ) FICTION TORRES 2011 Available in some locations

Annotation:Let's face it - books that you remember long after you've read them, the ones that make you turn your clock to the wall so you won't know that dawn is approaching and you've stayed up all night reading - those books are few and far between. This is one of those books. (Alison's fave)

My Real Children
My Real Children By Walton, Jo (Book - 2014 ) FICTION WALTON 2014 All copies in use. Availability details Holds: 31 on 12 copies

Annotation:In her confused state near the end of her life, Patricia Cowan has two sets of memories of two very different lives, diverging at the point where her fiance gave her an ultimatum. Field of Prey
Field of Prey By Sandford, John (Book - 2014 ) FICTION SANDFORD 2014 All copies in use. Availability details Holds: 11 on 37 copies

Annotation:Lucas Davenport and his cronies are once again knee deep in dead bodies, this time in an abandoned farmyard in the middle of cornfields: nice, private, and quiet. As always, Sandford and Lucas are superb. (Lisa's fave)

The Weirdness
The Weirdness A Novel By Bushnell, Jeremy P. (Book - 2014 ) FICTION BUSHNELL 2014 Available in some locations

Annotation:Why did I enjoy this so much? Well, I needed a good laugh and this made me guffaw in public, which I think is a good thing. I'm not sure if it was because the humor matched my own or because the main character was so relate-able. Whatever it was, it made morning commutes on public transit magic and made me look forward to that precious time sitting with a book. (Heather's fave)

Death Vows
Death Vows A Donald Strachey Mystery By Stevenson, Richard (Book - 2008 ) MYSTERY STEVENSON 2008 Available in some locations

Annotation:Ninth in the series, and just as witty as all the rest. (Matt's fave)

The Mall
The Mall By Grey, S. L. (Book - 2012 ) FICTION GREY 2012 Available in some locations

Annotation:Don't be fooled by the crappy-looking cover and title, this little gem is freaking awesome. (Nick's fave)

Lost Animals
Lost Animals Extinction and the Photographic Record By Fuller, Errol (Book - 2013 ) 591.68 F9658L 2014 Available in some locations Holds: 1 on 1 copy

Annotation:A photograph makes whatever the subject, so much more real. I may have to actually buy this. What is that thing on the cover, you ask? A thylacine. It used to live (some allege that it stil does) on the island of Tasmania. (Tama's fave)

Mind of Winter
Mind of Winter A Novel By Kasischke, Laura (Book - 2014 ) FICTION KASISCHKE 2014 All copies in use. Availability details Holds: 2 on 6 copies

Annotation:I read this in one day. . .well, actually I was reading it during the day but had to stop reading it once the sun set because it was so-o-o creepy, but good creepy. And then I woke up at 3 am and had to finish reading it. It's a psychological thriller, no, it's a ghost story, no, it's a psychological thriller. Oh man, it sucked me in--chilling! (Karen E's fave)

A Highly Unlikely Scenario, Or, A Neetsa Pizza Employee's Guide to Saving the World
A Highly Unlikely Scenario, Or, A Neetsa Pizza Employee's Guide to Saving the World By Cantor, Rachel (Book - 2013 ) FICTION CANTOR 2014 Available in some locations

Relish My Life in the Kitchen By Knisley, Lucy (Book - 2013 ) GN 920 KNISLEY 2013 Available in some locations

Annotation:Sometimes you just need full color illustrations of food with wonderful stories about family and friends. And the illustrated recipes in each chapter is the added bonus of this beautiful book. (Laural's fave)

A Visit From the Goon Squad
A Visit From the Goon Squad By Egan, Jennifer (Book - 2010 ) FICTION EGAN 2010 Available in some locations

Annotation:The goon in the title is time, and the main theme of this book is how time changes us, turns us into someone we wouldn't have recognized when we were young. This could be a real bummer of a theme, too, but the book is so smart, engaging and intricately plotted that the theme just kind of washed over me as I was involved with its characters and delighted by its fine writing. (Diana's fave)
